the crowd from the dungheap's song, lily of laguna:
Quote: | She's my lady love,
She is my dove, my baby love,
She's no gal for sitting down to dream,
She's the only queen Laguna knows;
I know she likes me.
I know she likes me
Becase she says so;
She is ma Lily of Laguna.
She is ma Lily and ma Rose. |
and i was watching the inauguration of obama and one of the bands played the tune of the adelaide song.

Just listened to that version - agree with the hair on back of neck comment .
Maybe we should stamp our feet as a drum substitute as we sing it in future -
make it a real stirring marching song .

Here we go:
Adelaide: the tune is the US Marines Hymn
Brisbane: French national anthem "La Marseillaise"
Carlton: Lily Of Laguna which can be downloaded from this page: http://www.dismuke.org/how/prev2-05.html
Essendon: Sunny Side Up which can be downloaded from this page: http://www.dismuke.org/how/prev2-03.html
Freo: partly based on Stravinsky's "The Song Of The Volga Boatmen"
Geelong: Bizet's "Toreador Song"
Hawthorn: "Yankee Doodle Dandy"
Melbourne: Tune is the American marching song "A Grand Old Flag"
North Melbourne: to the tune of "Wee Doech 'n' Doris" which can be downloaded from this page:http://www.archive.org/details/HarryLauder
Port: modern song composed for the club
Richmond: "Row Row Row"
St Kilda: "When The Saints Go Marching In"
Sydney: "Notre Dame Victory March"
West Coast: modern song composed for the club
Western Bulldogs: tune of an old nautical song "Sons Of The Sea"
If you want to hear the Carlton & Essendon links above you'll need Real Player !!
For our great song go to http://amicus.collectionscanada.ca/gramophone-bin/Main/BasicSearch?coll=24&l=0&v=1
and search for "dolly" and scroll through the results. You'll find out the composers and what else they wrote. Downloads are there too !!
Wikipedia has some info too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodbye,_Dolly_Gray
Also there are previous threads on "Goodbye Dolly Gray" on Nicks
Hope all this helps !!! |
D4P - you are a LEGEND !!! A lot of those songs are very old. Probably all pre WW2. Inky Pinky was used by Australian troops in WW1.
