1950 Copeland Trophy winner Charlie Utting passed away last Sunday aged 86.

He played 125 games between 1943-1950. He retired at age 27.

Sadly he missed out on a Premiership after retireing early.

I thought he deserved a mention on Nicks.

I worked with Charlie in Langridge St, Collingwood.
I'm pretty sure he was there in 1990 because I remember his smile after seeing my handy work of decorating our building in Magpies after the 1990 grand final.
I'm not sure how long we worked together for... maybe 18 months.

He was bald, wore a woolen beanie and shorts (no matter how cold it was) and rode his bike to work from The Boulevard in Clifton Hill. He was a happy guy, except if he had an injury, then he would turn into a cranky bugger Smile
I think it was his daughter (or maybe his wife?) that I met. She warned me of Charlie being a fitness fanatic & getting cranky when he couldn't ride or jog.

One time Charlie called me outside work to introduce me to the council guy watering the trees. It was Tony Shaw Very Happy

One thing I remember Charlie telling me was how they had to still work back in those days and he retired from footy at his peak due to work and he always regretted it because he said he could have been part of the '53 flag.

I'm pretty sure I heard that he had died, or maybe I just presumed it (he would be over 100 today), but I still had that pang seeing this thread.

Rest in peace Charlie.
