More speculation ?
Fremantle makes massive bid for free-agent Travis Cloke
Mark Robinson Herald Sun
Quote: |
FREMANTLE has entered the fight for Travis Cloke with a knockout offer of about $1 million a season.
As Cloke discussions continue with Collingwood, the Dockers have become the first interstate club to make a genuine play for the powerhouse forward.
The Dockers have spoken to Cloke's manager, his father David. Talks are in their infancy.
Cloke is at the top of the Dockers' free-agent hit list.
This year he is believed to earn about $500,000 and could expect a rise to $700,000-$800,000 in any new deal at Collingwood.
Fremantle would not comment about Cloke last night but issued a statement to the Herald Sun.
"As part of Fremantle's broader list management strategy, we have been working on a free agency strategy for some time and we will continue to do so," it said.
"As part of that strategy, we will speak to a range of player managers about the contract status of a number of players who are on the AFL's free agency list. Other than that, we do not comment on speculation about player talks."
Cloke will be a restricted free agent at the end of the year, meaning Collingwood would be able to keep him by matching an offer made by a rival club.
Collingwood would receive compensatory draft picks for losing the superstar under free agency.
The Dockers have salary cap space and would need about $1 million to lure Cloke.
Fremantle's highest-paid player, skipper Matthew Pavlich, became a veteran this year, while its second highest-paid player, Aaron Sandilands, joins the veterans' list next year.
Only half of a veteran's contract is included in the salary cap.
Greater Western Sydney has been linked to Cloke, but the most recent reports say he has not received an offer from the Giants.
It is understood that remains the case.
If GWS made an official approach, Cloke would have the choice of $1 million-plus contracts from two interstate clubs, or a contract from the Magpies for significantly less.
The re-signings of Dane Swan, Scott Pendlebury and Dale Thomas have squeezed the cap at Collingwood.
It's believed Cloke Sr is pursuing third-party agreements that would boost his son's earning capacity if he stayed in Melbourne.
He recently signed with celebrity agent Ralph Carr, who is exploring commercial deals for the 25-year-old.
Cloke Sr looks after the football contracts of his son, who is in his eighth season at Collingwood.

Interesting that this thread started on Bigfooty a few hours earlier;

I love that article, it has a quote from a Freo source that you would get if you asked any of the 18 clubs in the league about any free agent or out of contract player.
But really, the stand out moment comes with three little words;
"It is understood..." |

If he signs this year I suspect it will be only for 2 years until he is a full free agent. This is bound to come up every year. _________________ Heeeeeeeeeeeeeey, we want some Bayley! |

Yeah stealing rumours from BF isn't a great look. Not knowing the rules of the game isn't a particularly good look either;
"Only half of a veteran's contract is included in the salary cap. "
Needs to touch up on the changes to the veteran's rules from next year. The rule changes to 100k for every player with 10 years of service for their club. Apart from Pav and Sandi, I can't think of too many others that meet the requirements at Freo? Johnson and McPharlin are the only two I can think of.
So overall you'd expect Freo are going to lose out under the rule change and have less salary cap space, not more, like Robbo is suggesting. _________________ Brown re his GF omission:

As many as Cloke allows.
He can stop all these rumors dead in their tracks you know. Just a stroke of the pen would do it. |

Now we're talking turkey. Because whilst Travis wouldn't consider the big bucks to play for a pathetic outfit like GWS, a million a year to play for Freo (who could win a flag) is a different matter.
Oh dear.
The best solution if you want free agency is this: Get rid of the salary cap! |

Same thing happens every time Travis's contract comes up for renewal.
The media announce every rumour as fact.
Gullible pie supporters buy every newspaper that has stories.
Collingwood supporters demand that the club sign Travis NOW.
Facts such as Travis is already in negotiation with Collingwood are ignored.
Expect many more "it is understood" and "sources close to the club" stories till he resigns.
Prediction: At least one of the Eddie haters will link these rumours to a sack Eddie demand. _________________ Carlscum 120 years being cheating scum |

I'm not trolling here as I'm a die hard Pies man and go nearly every week.
I have it on VERY, VERY good authority that Travis is already gone.
From what I've been told, he has accepted a $1.5m a year offer with GWS and this WILL be announced in the next 2 weeks.
I believe the Freo offer is a smoke screen created by the Pies to hide the GWS deal. I find it strange that Freo would make a play for Trav and offer him a million bucks, and then not be "available for comment".
Believe me, I hope everything I've heard is false and that Trav stays in the Black & White forever but the source is reliable (no, I won't say who). I've been upset about this for nearly 2 weeks now and hate to lump it on you guys but I fear it's all true and we've lost our boy.
Time to focus on this week's game and peck the eyes out of some Bulldogs.

^ I have it on VERY, VERY, VERY good authority he is staying and my source is more reliable than yours (no I won't say who it is).
I put an extra VERY there, so it must be better!
Not calling you a troll, but it sounds like tripe. Its hard to believe he/they would announce any deal prior to end of season and until then our sources (no matter how reliable) will only be used on Pies. |
