The Monash student newspaper has finally gone to the dark side.
In the first edition of this year, published today, there isn't a single piece that could be described as incompatible with the socialist viewpoint. Otherwise, the contents of the opinion pages are:
A feminist-oriented piece on the Assange rape case
A piece on Wikileaks and "the US war on democracy" by a self-described socialist.
A piece on Israel's reaction to the revolutions in the Middle East written by our own Sherrife (complete with an end note advertising the Marxism 2011 conference and the Socialist Alternative website).
A piece on the ALP's refugee policy written by another Socialist Alternative member.
Elsewhere, we have:
An editorial about student unions which concludes with an exhortation to "Smash things (e.g. fascists)";
Only two letters to the editor, one of which echoes the newspaper's stance on Wikileaks and another which criticises a fairly amiable right-wing letter to the editor published last year (back in more tolerant days) - one can only wonder whether letters of dissent will be included in future editions;
An interview with a Marxist former Australian soldier;
An essay promoting the merits of anarchism;
And, I kid you not, a cooking page (!) with recipes incorporating marijuana, an attempt to "further open the debate on the legalisation and decriminilisation of cannabis".
Heaven help us.
On a brighter note, I've just had an interview for the editor's position of the other (Caulfield campus) student publication. Hopefully, if I get the job, we can do something to rectify this wretched state of affairs. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I hardly think so David. It's not even O week yet. Last years ghost writers will be keeping it together by contributing over the summer. The regular contributors arent back from Portsea yet......lol......!
I also think you have commenced your campaign for editor and the application a little early. Most ppl are trying to see who has an iphone4 so they can get the best quality recordings of the lectures they intend to wag.
In the good old days, seeing as though some in here think I am ancient, we used to avoid the Lots Wife crowd. They were always the rather scruffy ones with weird badges on their lapels, and most likely in need of a feed and wash. Be careful where you lie down as they say! _________________ The Knights of Abbotsford |

Where could one obtain such an esteemed publication?
I need 2 copies, one for Andrew Bolt and one for stui.
Hmm.....maybe I only need one copy............ |

You've really outed yourself there, David.
I had to double check the OP wasn't by jack_spain.
Perhaps you're looking for a key post in a future Lib Government ... much like this young uni student was.

A hot-bed of anarcho-syndicalists, with a crypto fascist out-lier or 2.
Ah, the good old days.
I will get out my Leon Rosselson song book and brush up on some of the old favourites - looks like there could be a call for people who can sing "Keep the Red Flag Flying", yet. Maybe I'll even open a coffee shop and have folk-nights - the Songs of Ewan MacColl and such-like!
"In the morning, we built the city,
In the afternoon walked through its streets.
Evening saw us leaving.
We wandered through our days as if they would never end.
All of us imagined we had endless time to spend.
We never saw the crossroads and small attention gave
To landmarks on the journey from the cradle to the grave...."
Etc. |

Amen to that. The reverse is also true, unlike what some overly opinionated tools would have people believe.

Who are the "socialists"? What do you mean by "socialist"? Do you, eg, think there are any in the ALP? Exactly who is it that you are fed up with (or other people might be fed up with) and why do you think they are "socialists"?
Do you have some coherent critique or are you just listing a whole bunch of more-or-less unrelated opinions you don't like? |

Why did you capitalise "socialists" in your original post? _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives!
