Just out here in the Daicos Bar , dusting & adjusting some of the stuff, as you do off season, 3rd day of RnR with a coldy in hand Wink

Looking at my member badge collection, I noticed the first time the Aussie flag appears is 1992. Is that due to it being our 100th year...?

I've always loved how our emblem is the only one with the flag on it in the AFL.

I think it considered with the whole emblem change didn't it?

Which I believe was for the 100th year.

But if you look closely, you will see that just after the emblem 'changes' again with the flags changing side. Apparently, it had something to do with the Aust Government saying the Aus flag always has to come first and cant be covered by something?

Can anybody correct me on that, if it's wrong?

Nah. It just looked like the magpie took a dump on the Aussie flag.

Correct Brenny, the Aus flag always has to be on the left and can't be covered by something.

I reckon having the Aussie flag on our logo was part of the plan to create the impression OS that AFL and Collingwood are one, especially with the stated objective that we would become the Man U of Australia.

Didn't mind it with the flag on the right side and while I understand why it had to change, the Collingwood flag on the right side just looks like an extension of the magpie, making our mascot look like a black & white peacock.

John Howard met with Eddie a few years back and asked for the flag to be swapped to the left.

I still remember the story being on the news.

Magpies told to do the right thing on club logo

By Patrick Bartley The Age
September 16, 2003

The offending Collingwood logo.

Some Collingwood symbols are not sacred after all. Months after vowing never to surrender its black-and-white guernsey, the club has bowed to pressure to change another potent Magpie symbol: the club logo.

As Collingwood prepared yesterday for Saturday's preliminary final, it confirmed that the Federal Government had asked it to redesign the logo because it breached protocol on the positioning of the Australian flag.

According to the Office of Protocol in the Prime Minister's Department, the flag should be on the left of the logo, not the right.

The Government approached the club after a member of the public wrote to a federal MP complaining that the Australian flag was "inappropriately used" on the logo.

The Government's Commonwealth Flag Officer, Jenny Goldsworthy, said: "It was just a matter of the flag changing from right to left, but Collingwood were very good and understanding. I spoke to their historian who explained the logo had been created in 1992 to mark their centennial year."

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire confirmed last night that the Office of Protocol had been in touch with the club and they would begin to change the logo in the coming months.

"Certainly we'll work in with them. It was a mistake made back in 1992. We are an Australian club and very proud of that fact and the Australian flag will take pride of place. It'll be a transitional job made in conjunction to when the club moves to Olympic Park. The merchandise and letterhead, etc, will have to change with the new address and that's the time the logo will be put in place."

McGuire said the club had been made aware of the problem with its logo and was acting as quickly as it could to have the Australian flag moved to the left of its logo.

I don't know what's more amusing out of that story: that the magpie looked like it was crapping on the Union Jack or that it took someone all of 11 years to finally notice it...

I hate the union jack most. Could live with the stars. Like this version very much with two pie flags. Wish I could buy a sticker for the car like this.

Since one magpie is supposedly a symbol of bad luck but two magpies is supposed to be fortunate, I think we should have two magpies on the club logo and the club motto "Floreat Pica" should be added.

I liked the rebellious nature of the old AFL logo and how the Magpie's tail obscures the Union Jack. Very Republican.

Honest John was upset about the insult to his Mother England.

To be honest, aside from the Republican bent, I don't like either flag. The balck white flag is not stripes. We are black and white stripes, not hoops. I also dislike the amount of colour in the logo.
