Marty will never be a good defender imo.

Play him as a high half forward and watch the goals come!

He doesn't know how to defend deep!

He is a creator though!

Is him as a high half and watch the goals come a game or a musical instrument?

Harry usually gets off easy with the fans. Played like a first gamer last night. Like someone else said he is very frustrating to watch. Mayb we should try him somewhere further up the ground. It almost seems like he panics every time he gets the pill.

It's not panic. He thinks he's Ronaldo (the Brazilian Ronaldo), but he's not.

I thought he played well. Did some very nice things, made a couple of mistakes, far from worst on ground. After a 2 year absence I thought it was a damn good comeback.

Clarke is a fair to good player, but not the type to be relied upon. His dropped mark on the boundary line that cost a goal is a prime example.
For some reason he is romanticized by the faithful as being better than he is.

The Irishman did ok for mine, not brilliant, but serviceable. He sure gave us more than either Daisy or Harry or Dawes, thats for sure. !

During the pre-season I stated that I thought Marty Clarke would return a different player. He looked bigger and the fact he wanted to come back to the AFL and Bux wanted him made me believe he was ready to give it everything and become not just a good average player but a player we could trust to carry his fair share of the load, put his head over ball when needed, win his contest more aften than not, chase and tackle forwards and just generally become more reliable. After last night he showed none of these qualities I was hoping to see from him. I know it's round 1 but blokes like this on the cusp just need to hit the ground running.

1eyedpie said it best, he is not a defender and never will be. Put him into the midfield rotation pushing forward and teach him how to chase and tackle and how to put his body on the line, he looks like scared chicken shit whenever heavy footsteps and hard breathing surrounds him. Pull your finger out and show some bloddy leadership or rot in the VFL for I care.

I thought Marty did OK, certainly wasn't the worse out there.
But Harry - not a very good game at all.
Harry - if you are going to play on one of the best forwards in the game, and decide to leave him to affect a contest, you need to; clunk the mark, collect the ball cleanly, spoil to a defensive position, STAY ON YOUR FEET, dispose of the ball cleanly to a team mate. I have no problems Harry going to help, but he needs to be effective which wasn't happening - too many mistakes which let the Hawks in with a quick turnover.
Manassa is on the 50m, fakes the handball. He's going to shoot for goal, and he's put it through! HE'S PUT IT THROUGH. By golly what an individual effort. Thats got to be the GOAL OF THE CENTURY.

I'm prepared to cut him some slack especially after a 2 year absence.

There was worse out there last night & Marty wasn't one of them.

impressive return in a finals type game. Since his 1st nab cup game the improvement has been notable and steady. He's gonna make a few people look really silly before year's end. Very happy to have him back.

Clarke - give him a break. Obviously his work ethic is killer, hence him being selected over other players. We see room for improvement and a dedication that will get him to where we need.

Harry - failed by trying too hard to break tackles against the best team in the comp. Tested boundaries and now he knows where they are.

1st game. Give the guys and the coach a break.

Yeah I'd play him on a wing.

He's not a defender.

If anything it seems at times like he tries to do too much. He kept getting caught trying to take opponents on. Only one person can get away with that and that's the Matrix, Scott Pendlebury.

^ yep, he's a damn good player when not trying to do too much. I love when Harry takes the game on, he can be very damaging but he's got to know his limitations. Atm he doesn't quite have the form to be pushing those limits. I'm confident he'll get better though

Agreed. I thought Marty had a great 1st quarter. Got in and made a difference. Also felt his fitness and run and carry were a lot better. Especially for his first game back. Good effort 7/10.

Harry on the other hand was just plain beaten on the day and making silly mistakes like he used to in his first year. And holding on to the bsll again way too long!
