Posting problems - please read

Post by Mike »

Occasionally a post crops up with just the figure 1 in it. I assume that it's a system problem and the poster didn't mean to post a 1, that the original posting has been wiped.

It's never happened to me, and I can't make it happen, so I can't fix it. I need to track down a common factor, so if it happens to you or, in particular, happens more than once please let me know and give me, if possible, details of your post such as - formatting, links, images. I'm particularly interested in knowing if it ever happens with a straight text posting - no sig., nothing. I also need to know which browser and version you use, your operating system (Win95, 98, NT, Mac etc) and whether you have previewed the post before posting.

Scottie Davo mentioned to me that sometimes when he hits the backspace key, his browser takes him to the previous page rather than deleting the letter and he has to click Forward to get back to his posting. I think this is a browser problem rather than a site problem and is unrelated, I have also noticed it occasionally using different machines on different sites.

I always write my posts in Notepad or Wordpad and then copy it into the posting window, then if something goes wrong I still have my original post. I recommend that practice to everybody whenever you have to type a lot of text into a browser window - not just bulletin board windows - it can save a lot of frustration.

Anyway... if anyone can shine any light on the '1' problem I'd appreciate being told about it.

I seem to recall the problem happening to me a while back. It was when you introduced the feature which enabled us to use different fonts, colours and sizes. I attempted to do some fancy lettering, but I didn'y know how to do it properly. I just highlighted the text, made the changes to size, colour and font, and assumed that it would show up when I posted it. Instead it just came out as "1".

At least I think that's what happened. If my memory serves me correctly.

That last one was done without a signature. Same result.

I'm using Internet Explorer 5.5

All I did was write in some text. Then I highlighted it. Then I scrolled through the Font scroll bar, the size scroll bar and the colour scroll bar and came up with some ridiculous font, size and colouring ... All this code appeared ... and then I just posted the message.

And it came out as "1"

OK I've got it. It's when a pair of tags are used with nothing between them. When you highlight the text and click on one of the buttons it puts an empty tag pair at the end of the text, instead of around the text. I knew it did that but I didn't know that it wiped the post.

Thank you - I can and do something about it now.
