Scotch wrote:... which left Wellingham as our best un-tagged outside midfielder
If 20 contested possession out of 37 = an "outside" midfielder, what ratio of contested to uncontested would you expect from an inside mid?
Not really having a go at you, Scotch, just an expression, I'm sure. But that is the thing about Wellingham: sure, he's quick and he can get out on his own for the receive, but that isn't all he does - he is also very, very good at close quarters, and can get quality ball out of a big pack using, apparently, some sort of black bloody magic.
Ball does it with guts and determination and incredible body strength.
Swan does it with sheer one-grab speed - he's grasped the ball, taken three quick steps and disposed of it before you can blink.
Didak does it with supreme ball-skill artistry
Pendlebury does it with hypnotism - he mesmerises opponents and puts themn into a slow motion trance
Wellingham does it with bloody magic - one minute he's a skinny kid on the wrong side of the contest, the next moment he's dived in, grabbed the pill, and is pelting out the other side heading goalwards.
Over time, I expect Wellingham to replace Luke Ball as our #1 inside midfielder. Not this year, but maybe when Ball is 32 and looking at retiring so as to have more time for polishing all those premiership medallions.
Top post. And yet there are still some who do see Wellingham as an outside player who does not win the hard ball.
He's not a superstar, but he does have a very rare skillset and is an important part of our side. Was awesome to see him step up today and become a more offensive player in the absence of Swan and Thomas. With those two in the team, he had been playing more of a checking role.
I'm not sure I agree with your last comment. I think it's good to have one guy who is strong, tough and a great tackler as your number one inside mid, and almost solely plays that role (Luke Ball for us). Wellingham is not a one dimensional player, and I don't think shackling him down to the #1 extractor role is a good idea. If we had to pick one player from our current best 22 to move into that role, I think it would be Swan.
Blair would be next in line if we're looking 4-5 years to the future. We might have even unearthed someone completely new by then to take the place. Who knows.

Blair is made for it, Scotch. Built like the proverbial, very quick hands ... can we say "Diesel"? But Wellingham is another bit of inside gold.
Inky, fast forward those five years I mentioned and Wellingham will be 29 as we enter the business end of the season. That's not a bad age at which to be taking on a more limited role. You shouldn't have to be all things to all men at at that age.
As I keep saying best Pie side I've seen in 50 years! A champion team not just a team of champions.
Some reflections:
Fasalo is classy but we didn't see any of his long kicks and unfortunately lacks pace which is probably why he went at pick 45! still a great debut.
Trarant is a different Tarrant than 5 years ago as he is just so committed. He is fantastic.
Pendles is as good as Buckley ever was!!
Wood oh Woody finally he deserves a game in our top 22!
Our structure is so good it is scary!!!!! And that is from a pessimist!
Ben Reid should become an All Australian at the end of the year.
That goal from Wellers from the forward ruck contest is becoming predictable. He has done the same a number of times now.
Finally the one thing that stands out is our skill level!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never seen it so good. We are not working class any more we are just class full stop.....
we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest.

Wello, had to perform. Just didn't want to be outdone by his understudy!!
Also glad to read that people are finally stating that we are the most skilled side in the comp... about time!!
Just a quick note.. When I heard Wello was up for trade, I couldn't believe that! Nor could I believe people were calling him soft! Joffa was right when he said we had a real ripper in Sharrod! Honestly he didn't surprise me today in the way he just stepped into Thoma's right foot and Swans left!
