Surely we already have it mate. Darren Jolly should be empowered to start developing the ruckmen who will support him and eventually take over when he retires.perthmagpie wrote:Anyone notice how good Sydney are at developing mediocre ruckman into very god ruckman e.g. Jolly, Seaby, Mumford etc.
Can we steal their ruck development program?

mumford was ready made and ready to go at the cats. they just made the mistake of locking in blake after his sook in 07 and could not afford mumford. they were desperate to keep him and had looked to free money up but it wouldnt happen last year and the swans were offering a shitload for 4 years.perthmagpie wrote:Anyone notice how good Sydney are at developing mediocre ruckman into very god ruckman e.g. Jolly, Seaby, Mumford etc.

We can start by drafting ruckmen who aren't stick figures to begin with.perthmagpie wrote:Anyone notice how good Sydney are at developing mediocre ruckman into very god ruckman e.g. Jolly, Seaby, Mumford etc.

Wood, Fraser, Richards and McKee all fell into that catergory and Ceglar unfortunately probably continues the trend.
The one ray of light is that Witts who we most certainly will draft is already a man mountain at his tender age yet still has shown an ability to find the football around the ground.
I'm looking forward to his arrival.
He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD!

JACK!!! FFS - enough about Maxwell already! He was busting his arse as usual last night. But yes, Leigh Brown wandering around lost again. He needs to be the sub really.jack_spain wrote:Really, on form, tell me why on earth Leigh Brown or Nick Maxwell should be playing right now?
I thought it was a good hit-out to rid ourselves of some complacency or over-confidence, perhaps enhanced by the towelling up of Dreamons on QB, and recent history against the Pink Ducks.
The Ducks had a good crack at us, obviously stung into action by their piss-poor effort against Caaaaaaaaarlton.
During the broadcast, the commentary morons correctly pointed out that Sydney played a more attacking, fluent game against us this time. Whereas under Paul Roos, they played a very slow stagnant style.
But of course, as many of the gang have pointed out, had we kicked straight earlier, the game would have been well out of their reach.
Would have helped if half our team actually got a touch of the ball too...
Love Pendles pass backwards to Bolton, what a gift! Unbelieveable...

The problem is most blokes over 200cm are stick men at 17-18. Even among the older players, there aren't too many massively muscular blokes over 200cm - with Sandilands being an exception. Most of the physically stronger rucks are a bit on the shorter side.swoop42 wrote:We can start by drafting ruckmen who aren't stick figures to begin with.perthmagpie wrote:Anyone notice how good Sydney are at developing mediocre ruckman into very god ruckman e.g. Jolly, Seaby, Mumford etc.

And yes, Witts - even simply based on height and size (which is more than half the battle for a ruckman) - looks a mouth-watering prospect. Still, lets remember that very few ruckmen do anything at senior level until at least 23-24. So lets not put too much expectation on the kid for a few years yet.
Still, solely on their physical attributes, Witts and Ceglar do look like a good future 1-2 ruck combo. Development is now the key.
Well done boys!

I can think of one other bye - the week-off after winning the first qualifying final (if we finish in Top 4).
We must come out much stronger than what we have shown so far after byes. Hopefully last year's PF against the Cats is an indication that when it comes to finals time, the boys will be totally switched on!

Just watching the last qtr on replay, at the 30 second mark or so of the qtr, fwd pocket throw in. Beautiful tap by Wood to Ball who misses a sitter. Rt foot snap for goal 20 meters out.
Great tap ruckwork by Wood & another easy miss.

In the post match press conference Malthouse made reference to Dawes carrying an injury or injuries. Malthouse said the injury (ies) are going to be improving in the next week or so indicating things will be better for him.
Lots to look forward to.

The NRL won't be laughing too loud. Their best crowd was in Newcastle - 22.3Kjack_spain wrote:Spot on. The NRL must be laughing.mattmc33 wrote: I enjoyed the night, but the one thing I came away with was this - on a beautiful Sydney winter's night, in that great stadium, against the best and most popular football club in the country, the Swans could only draw 38,000. Based on that, how on earth does Demetriou believe that GWS will be able to draw any more than 10,000 a game? How can that be sustainable as a business model?
From the start of this whole Greater Waste of Space business, I always thought a second team in Sydney was absolute folly, and last night confirmed that without question. The Fat Controller is going to piss away a large amount of that billion dollar TV deal just keeping those guys afloat, and that's nothing less than a disaster for the game overall.
Their next best was in Campbelltown - 19.2K
For those not familiar with the geography, neither are in greater Sydney.
Suns v Dogs on Gold Coast 16.1K, Titans v Sharks later same night on Gold Coast 12.9K.
Not a lot for them to laugh about.

Could not agree more Joffa. We dominated most of the night and if kicked straight would have won by 10 goals.joffa corfe wrote:Great win by The Pies.
Cloke sensational, Davis very good. All other star players had a night we'd all rather forget..but we won!!
So 3/4 of our side were down and struggling and we win..no probs this end of town. Malthouse would be lickng his lips..Bart Cummings style.
Sydney play ugly scrapy football that is hard to break through.
The surface was a disgrace and moving under foot which played into Sydney's hand as they play most of their football on their knees and at ground level. Our guys were having trouble keeping their feet which enabled Sydney to smother us.
Kicking at goal on the agenda this week, but not much else. Pies will rebound soundly on the 'G' and play the way we know they can.

Something needs to be done about this "advantage" rule. Twice the Swans got a gift goal after our guys stopped at the whistle (as they're trained to do) while the Swans kept running. Those 2 goals seemed to start their run too, could have cost us big time.
If the players stop, then make the kick be taken over the mark.
