Apology

Post by Mike »

Thank you Pies for a win today. I couldn't have coped with a loss to the Blues after a day spent trying to keep the system up and the scoreboard running with string and sealing wax.

The system decided to spit the dummy this morning, obviously the prospect of coping with Collingwood v Carlton traffic was too daunting.

I managed to keep the scoreboard running by doing it manually, but chat was down all day. We've only just got it working again, so apologies to all those who were trying to access the Bulletin Board and Scoreboard Chat today - we'll try not to do it again.

That was obviously a bit premature. The system collapsed as soon as I posted it and has been down for another 14 hours.

This has been our longest down-time ever and I hope that record stands forever.

I'm not going to tempt fate again by declaring it fixed, but fingers crossed.

Now for some sleep!

So how do you run a scoreboard manually in cyberland?

I immediately had visions of the suburban grounds in Adelaide, where you've got a man who sits in a little shed at one end of the scoreboard with a whole lot of numbers. Whenever someone scores, he has to come out of his little shed and take down the number that was there and replace it with the new number.

I never used to give it a second thought in the old days, but after seeing AFL matches at big venues like the MCG, with their whizz bang electronic razzamatazz scoreboards and video screens etc, I found the manually operated scoreboards of suburban Adelaide an absolute scream.

God knows what they've got in Tasmania. They probably keep score on a bloody abacus.

Cyber-manual Alf is: every time there's a score, opening the files that create the scoreboard , changing the numbers and goalkickers, saving and uploading to the server. Then, because while you were doing that there were more scores, trying to figure out who it was and what it was and repeating the process.

That's how we used to do it when we first started the live scoreboard in 97. We very quickly got sick of it and I wrote some routines that replaced the drudge. All we do now is type the score change into a form and submit it. The system does the calculations, calculates the quarter time, writes all the new files and generally makes sure everything is consistent and accurate. That is when the system is working.

I'm hoping your abacus remark was a joke, although I could have used one yesterday - lets see 12 times 6 plus... oh shit they've kicked another goal.

Just remember that the country's leading unofficial afl club web site comes from Tassie... and be humble.

Shame on us!!! We've just celebrated 100 years of Federation, and we're still indulging in inter-colonial bickering.

My apologies to everyone in Van Dieman's Land. I was just having a larf. At least I didn't make any two-headed type jokes.

I might as well keep this thread alive while I'm still apologising and I'm tempting fate by posting here again.

After we got our problems with our server worked out, the guys who run the domain name server that keeps our name alive on the internet decided to reconfigure their machine... and down we went again - totally unrelated problem to the one we've been having. Anybody who's been trying to get on and has ended up at a crowd called Taslink can blame Eftel who were the ones that reconfigured our settings.

Eftel are in Perth and I was starting to suspect that this string of problems was a wild West Coast scheme to put us off the air. Then I realised that West Coast aren't in our league and it wouldn't achieve anything for them, they'd be better off picking on Fremantle.

We're back and we're staying back

ps - sorry Alf - I'm just not used to you having a laugh...didn't pick it.
