response to the "Eddie is a Wanker" chant. Well d

With the "Eddie is a Wanker" chant - the Port crowd started a fight they couldn't finish with that one

A couple of highlights from a disappointing night...

The "Eddie is a wanker" chant actually had the most legs of all their chants all night and it didn't come out til we were well and truly dead in the water. Bit sad really considering the flaunting of b&w stripes, magpie emblems etc that went on (from us). Expected more. Think they thought they'd simply be able to cow the b&w minority by weight of numbers. Perhaps they thought we'd just roll over and surrender the colours. Duh!!! Whatever...they weren't really prepared for our proud defiance. Consumed with envy rather than rivalry - consequently more scared than defiant. But then, that's just one of the many things that makes them the faux-magpies and there's no denying it is there?

We shut their mulleted gobs several times but 3 memorable occasions really stick out...

1. In response to the "EIAW" chant the cheersquad responded with a rousing chant of "Eddie is a legend" that quickly quelled the teals. Honorable mention to the bloke who stood up and asked "So what's your president's name then?" All you could hear was the shuffling of hundreds of pairs of mocassins.

2. I usually HATE this one but this time it was right. Final quarter, horse bolted, hurting like hell, the squad sang the anthem complete with scarves, banners etc. Not celebrating the performance but rubbing salt into open greeny-blue wounds that'll never be black and white. All they could muster in response was hissy-fit petulance.

3. Mid-afternoon Sunday. SA-Vic Border. The "Welcome to Victoria" sign is now completely transformed into a black and white "mini-banner" complete with crepe paper magpie. Resplendent for all to see in perfectly spell checked grammar are the words "Eddie MaGuire is a Legend" Dunno how they (presumably the cheersquad) reached it to put it up but I have visions of teetering pyramids of drunken men topped with a small child or lightweight woman clutching a large roll of sticky tape. It's brilliant. Naturally we dropped a U-ey and took some happy snaps.

An appropriate welcome to a land where footy free speech still lives and breathes! THANK GOD!!!
