I should have also added that we would've had to trade for him back then. For a trade, it probably wouldn't be worth it. It's only worth it if he comes to us for nothing.bwphantom wrote:Had this discussion few years ago. I said back then he would be handy to fill the role that Anvil performed.
Was shut down, apparently he is a dud??

Theoretically, Giles and Caddy should not cause salary cap issues.burnsy17 wrote:I think now that the Cloke deal has dropped, it'll be kids, kids and more kids....
i wouldnt have thought we'd be landing Giles, Caddy, Goddard, Q-Ball or anyone else from another club unless he comes at almost the same price as a first year player!
Caddy will be a 3rd year player and only negotiating his second contract. His decision to leave GC is not money related. He is not a superstar yet and most clubs would be reluctant to pay much above the base wage for a 3rd year player.I get the impression Caddy just wants back in Melbourne and is happy to go wherever a deal can be done.
With Jolly likely to retire at the end of next season, Giles could be offered a 2 year back ended contract.Either way, if we were to make a play for Giles, his wage would be on par with Woods who would be gone.

Clearly, there are better options than Q-Lynch for our second ruck role. Problem is we can't afford them.
Tippett is on the market and would be almost perfect for the role. However, we'd have to trade for him, and have the big $ spare in the cap. Realistically it ain't going to happen. For Tippett or a player of this quality/status.
Consequently, we are limited to searching for a player that is coming free (trade cost wise) and cheapish ($ salary cap wise).
Q-Lynch does fit this mold. I'd suggest he is a better player than Martin. Not sure Martin fills the forward role that well. He is more a ruckman than forward. In which case, we are probably better of playing Witts as 2nd ruck.
Lynch or Pederson are two who may be suitable. Ultimately, we want a hard battering ram type player, doesn't have to be the most talented. Needs to get a bit of the ball, kick a few goals every now and then, but must smash into the opposition and soften them. Thats what L.Brown was good at. He hurt opposition in the tackle, bumping and bullocking in the scrimmages. Dawes not so good at that, but trys. Lynch does have that hard edge to his game, we just need to promote it.
In summary, reckon Lynch is a solid option. It's a gamble. But worth a serious look.
McIntosh is rumored to be looked at by the Cats (as well as Caddy and Rivers). He is more of a ruck and has trade value. But has shown to be a quality player. Do we look at him or Martin and have more of a two ruck setup through the season.
Another consideration is if the AFL are going to tamper with the sub rule. I reckon they are looking at 2 and 2 at some stage (Grrrr). This will also impact what we go after. 2 and 2 will spell absolute death of a full time 2nd ruck. You'd have to go for a forward that can ruck.

Yeah I've gone off him now. The logic is too strong can't make the Dees first 22 then what..Joel wrote:How many goals has Martin kicked over the past two seasons?
Was he injured this year? I don't think he played much footy.
The Age mentioned Jared Rivers (not for the leigh brown role) just as a swap / pick-up / trade
