Recreational cyclists

I live on a road popular with hordes of Lycra clad males in the early hours. Peaceful mornings are punctuated by the sound of their yelling when they go past en masse. I wish they would keep it down as I am caring for someone with advanced cancer and PTSD and mornings are his worst time of the day and it's better for him if he can sleep through it.

I'm a recreational rider and love the Capital City Trail and the Kew Boulevard, but I am amazed at the stupidity of some riders really. It is astonishing to watch bike riders screaming down hills of the Merri SHARED Path in Fairfield only to ring the bell when on top of hapless walkers who can't see them coming. I know it scares the bejesus out of me when it happens and so yes, when walking on shared-paths I walk on the right just as I was taught to do at school; I can then see what's coming. Only one bozo has abused me for this, and yes, he rode straight at me screaming expletives. Having said that, most riders I encounter when walking my dog are friendly, cordial fellow-path users.
Not so on the Kew Boulevard though. These (mostly) blokes refuse to ride on the dedicated bike path behind Royal Talbot and instead ride on a narrow lane with double lines preventing legal overtaking by cars. It's almost impossible to pass them leaving the suggested metre clearance. Sitting behind two riders for a kilometre is frustrating in the extreme, especially as the bike only lane was created for them to ride this stretch in safety.

After the epic draw comes the decisive knockout!

Yeah I find that very annoying, also, when they ride on the line of a bike lane rather than in it,Culprit wrote:I had two bike riders on Dandenong Road this morning. I ride on bike paths! I don't go near the road, can't hear anything coming up behind me and I get a fright, so I'm scared I'll wobble into their path, even if they do see me!

many bike lanes are not wide enough to cater for the opening of car doors. when this is the situation i will always ride on the edge of the bike lane and sometimes in the car lane.think positive wrote:Yeah I find that very annoying, also, when they ride on the line of a bike lane rather than in it,Culprit wrote:I had two bike riders on Dandenong Road this morning. with regards to culprit's experience with two bike riders, there is nothing illegal about riding two abreast but cyclists and motorists should be considerate of each other.

Correct weight. Speaking of which, riding in this hot weather has helped shed a few kilo's.Pochemuchka wrote:many bike lanes are not wide enough to cater for the opening of car doors. when this is the situation i will always ride on the edge of the bike lane and sometimes in the car lane.think positive wrote:Yeah I find that very annoying, also, when they ride on the line of a bike lane rather than in it,Culprit wrote:I had two bike riders on Dandenong Road this morning. The fact that I'm urinating a very dark yellow has nothing to do with it

im talking about next to the golf course, no cars parked on the side of the road, one lane each way for traffic, and not that wide, road just asks to be sped on! there is a bike lane either side, I rode on it years ago, its a pretty even surface, and plenty wide enough, yet they ride on the line.Pochemuchka wrote:many bike lanes are not wide enough to cater for the opening of car doors. when this is the situation i will always ride on the edge of the bike lane and sometimes in the car lane.think positive wrote:Yeah I find that very annoying, also, when they ride on the line of a bike lane rather than in it,Culprit wrote:I had two bike riders on Dandenong Road this morning. whats considerate about 2 cyclists riding side by side on a one lane each way road? how the hell do you get past them? peak hour taking kids to school, or going to work, traffic full both sides of the road, and you get blocked by cyclists.
as a rider and a driver, personally I find a lot of cyclists worse, arrogant, defiant, and some times plain stupid at taking a risk just because they think they have the right of way.
equal rights when they pay rego and insurance to use the roads. whos money pays the hospital bills for the cyclist that gets hit doing something dumb?
then ive been the other side, actually on the bike path near altona beach, some moron does a u-ey, and actually drives on the foot path, nearly put me in the bushes.

You are right, it's not illegal but their arogance makes them the perfect candidates to be organ donors.Pochemuchka wrote:many bike lanes are not wide enough to cater for the opening of car doors. when this is the situation i will always ride on the edge of the bike lane and sometimes in the car lane.think positive wrote:Yeah I find that very annoying, also, when they ride on the line of a bike lane rather than in it,Culprit wrote:I had two bike riders on Dandenong Road this morning.
