What's goin' on in the Culprit household?Culprit wrote:All good, the Mrs did a swan dive off her bike this year as well. Not a great year for riding lol
Mr & Mrs Culprit testing out the "giving" properties of concrete?
Take it from me: there ain't much, indeed not much at all.
I've had 3 falls:
One at the local park where I would cycle on the path & my dog would run next to me. A woman with a big Labrador on an extendable lead was looking elsewhere & her dog ran across my path to smell my dog's backside. Collision, I fell off & on to the concrete: fractured a small bone in my wrist area.
The other two were in the city on the same spot two weeks apart but landed & bruised my knee on a crossover of tram tracks where I slipped in the rain on metal next to the tracks but not in the tracks. Seriously injured pride.

Hubby bought me a new bike this week as the old one is steel, heavy, and rusty!
Took it for a test run with junior this morning, I gave her about 500 metres head start while I adjusted my heart rate monitor. About 3 k in I was used to the gears, brakes etc, and started trying. I realized I was still only 500 metres behind her.
Slammed it on, caught her, passed her like she was standing still and in the space of about 1.5 Klm I was 500 metres in front of her! I will never forget the look on her face!
Tomorrow I'll stop waiting for hubby to adjust her gears and do it myself! But boy, today was fun!
Yeah, like the new bike! Cheers!

If it's not a rude question, how much did the new one cost?
I've got a probably 15 year old racing bike in the shed. Neighbour threw it out a few years back (totally like him, he'd buy the kids expensive shit they never used then piff it) so I picked it up, gave it a clean, new seat and proper tyres and it goes like a cut cat. Metal frame but really light.
Problem is, my legs never liked cycling, even when I was a kid and cycled everywhere. When I was young and fit I could run 10km without breaking a sweat or puffing but cycling more than 2km killed me. 4 minutes on an exercise bike and I'm walking like Steady Eddie.
Plus, I can find plenty of ways to injure myself without needing a bike.

Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down.

its just a mountain bike from Aldi special buys, $119!! (I can hear the sniggers from the bike snobs through the pc!!)
nothing flash, but it does the job, its nice and smooth, the gear change is great. cant see me doing anymore than a 20-25klm ride once or twice a week, so yeah! its fine. like you, my legs don't adjust to well to the movement of a bike, but I just cant run anymore, my knees are shot. I only run occasionally on the treadmill as it has suspension, and once in a blue moon ill run around cherry lake just to prove I still can. and I run when I do the obstacle courses, but you get that many bruises, the knee ache is just another pain!
I prefer mountain bikes because of the wider, more stable tyres! im a clumsy bugger!
if it dies i'll see how much im still into riding at the time, and then spend accordingly! id probably look on ebay! I wasn't looking for one, was happy with the rust bucket, but hubby insisted, who am I to argue!
have a look on ebay to see how much yours is worth, youd be surprised what they get if they have a brand name.
all of my gym equipment came from ebay or gumnut, cos people get bored with the machines real quick, except strange people like me. I killed my first treadmill, could only walk on it in the finish, bought that new on ebay, had it for about 4-5 years, just a chinese one, then bought a 2nd hand Nordic track, (much better quality) which now needs a new belt. was like new when I got it. funny thing was, I put my old treadmill on ebay starting at $100, was totally honest about the condition, (the frame had been cracked and repaired) and I got more for it than I paid for the Nordic track!
my cross trainer is worth $2,500 in the shop, had done 10 hours when I bought it (it comes up on the screen) and I paid $650 for it. its now got over 120 hours on it and its still like new. I also got a $1000 rowing machine for $250, as new, and a stationary bike for $200 worth $799, also as new.
lot of people around like your neighbour, they get a new hobby, spend all out on the biggest and best, and lose interest in no time at all. I just take advantage of it!

the thing with the cheaper bikes is the quality of the componentry. the bikes still work but, invariably, will not last as long. i have never seen a need to buy more than you need. i see so many execs and mature age men on expensive, top of the range bikes that they bought just cos they could.
i have three bikes - two road and one hybrid, commuter - and am looking to purchase a fourth at some stage this year; have not decided whether to get another road bike or a mountain bike.
it is best to see whether there will be longevity in your interest. if there is, over time you will find yourself wanting a better machine.

^ True that.
The old adage applies: "you get what you pay for" with respect to bikes.
A guy at work has 7 bikes.
He occasioanlly does the hell ride on beach road & for him riding up the dandenongs is like going down hill for me!
I have one bike. I need to lose weight to get a road bike. I've got a commuter bike: Trek 7.5 with Swiss Wheels & a great rear hub that really does make the riding a lot smoother
