Whether he steps down now, or at the end of the year, who cares.

His contract was up, I think, and to avoid a full year of speculation he announced his retirement now.

Good call if you ask me.

Even if ASADA come out and throw bans at 14 players, which I don't know how they can if Dank isn't put on a stand in court and I don't know if ASADA's claims would stand without him, AD would still get pulled through the cleaners as it was on his watch.

If his contract was up, what's the different between announcing now or in the first week of October?

Well I think it's more like getting out before you are forced out.
His leadership will be remembered for how he handled (or didn't handle) the Essendon doping scandal.
It's been proven he tried to sweep it under the carpet and give Hird a soft fall.
A real leader would have put his bias aside and done what was in the best interests of the game.
I believe the ASADA report will be highly critical of his handling of the scandal and he wants to try and save the little face he has left.
He presided over a era in AFL of significant income streams which he used to prop up struggling clubs who by poor management and terrible board room governance found themselves broke. All this money has been squandered to the point that these clubs and the new clubs are on life support financially for eternity from the AFL.
He did however make sure he didn't miss out himself by getting the largest pay increases in AFL history.
Good bye and good ridence I say the game will not miss him at all.

Gerald Ford syndrome...

replaced Nixon

John Howard...replaced Downer

Gough Whitlam...replaced Calwell

a man is judged by his predecessor, and if that predecessor is a very special someone, like Wayne "Fairy Godfather" Jackson, then that man ain't so bad after all...

I agree - I wont share the rapture of others. I think he's been a great steward of the game, even if I didn't agree with all decisions.
Make that three.

I think the game is in a better spot now, than it was 10-15yrs ago.
You may be right.

If you are happy for the ends to justify the means, then he has been great.

I have major issues with the means, however

Oh my god. I had no idea they were brothers. Please tell me Gillon was adopted, because if he's anything like his brother he's actually going to be more obnoxious than Demetrio (I didn't actually think that was possible).

I concur.

I have no doubt that his replacement will be equally odious, however.
Why? It will be Eddie of course. :D

I think Andy has done a very good job overall. Probably made a good call as far as timing goes, CEO's have a limited life span.

Count me in. Should have done better with Essendon & James Hird. Needed to be more forthright & the penalty much more severe over Hird & especially Adelaide's CEO: should have been severely punished for his deliberate player overpayments

Otherwise, generally speaking:a good job overall.

Demetriou resigns. What is his legacy?

Post by collie dog »

Okay folks. We all know by now that Demetriou is going to pull the pin on his AFL career at seasons end (or did Fitzpatrick push him?).

Some people suggest Eddie might be an ideal replacement. Who knows.

My question is, what legacy do you think Demetriou has left the league with? Anything positive? Negative?

My initial view is that he grew the game as a business, but has marginalised the traditional fan in the process. But I won't be sorry to see the back of him.
