Tough one, it seems like it's a life skills class for disabled kids/young adults and personal grooming is certainly a life skill. While the girl may be happy with her pits au naturel, there is a case to be made for teaching her how to do it so that if/when it becomes a peer group issue or she decides to do it she is equipped to make the decision herself. I guess the issue comes with consent to do that, maybe the girl said at school it was fine then mum kicked up a stink. Who knows? What I do know is 3AW talkback outrage isn't something I'm taking at face value.

Not all parents have the ability to teach personal grooming skills and unfortunately not all teachers have tact. If she was shaved in front of the class without consent from her parent then the teacher may need a holiday or some reminder about dignity.

^^Yeah, symptomatic of the treatment of girls' bodies, but also of the treatment of the intellectually disabled. They don't know better, so we will decide for them, dignity be damned.

I remember watching a movie yonks ago about a mentally challenged pair that wanted to marry and have a kid. Very thought provoking. (Can't remember the ending)

Just like with people in a coma, some act like the person they discuss is not there, it's disrespectful. I cracked it with my sisters when my mum was unconscious at the end.

Woman around the corner, walks past my house everyday with her dog, her time before she looks after her son, who has some degree of autism. I saw her in a shop one day, and he wanted to look at something, I'll never forget the way she spoke to him. And the look on his face. Broke a piece of my heart for him. Poor kid just wanted to check out a toy.

That is not "basic self-care". It is either or both of (a) a way of humiliating someone you are supposed to be caring for and nurturing, and/or (b) projecting your own prissy and perverted notions of propriety and femininity onto someone without the resources to defend herself.

The carer should be required to show cause why she should not be sacked, and banned from further employment in any similar role.
