What a terrific start to the season. Can be summed up in two words: above expectations.
vs Lions:
Expectation: loss
Result: solid win after dominating for periods
vs Crows:
Expectation: pummeling
Result: under 5 goal loss. We were pummeled for periods but the end result is what it is
vs Dons:
Expectation: loss
Result: solid win on a big day
Are we playing perfect football? Far from it. But we are playing tough, structured footy, which is not easily being broken down. That's a great improvement on the second half of last year and a credit to the coaches. We are a tougher and harder running side than we've been in a while (as expected moving Beams on has helped us in this part of the game).
I did not and do not have high hopes for this season. Those hopes are now being reassessed given we have so far played above expectations (though we also need to consider the improvement of the Eagles, Dogs, Giants and Demons). No matter where we end up on the ladder I'll be happy with a season playing the sort of footy we've shown so far this year.

Couldn't think why apart from our younger squad than theirs. but I think attitude leads to success and fig jam hird has been given a lesson in just that. Geez I like beingthe underdog. One stubborn and arrogant to think his team are contenders so tops up his team with has beens.
The other honest and brave enough to recognise that his team were no longer good enough so began to transform his team through youth and character.
They may yet end up above us on the ladder at the end of the year but I know which team is going places!
no second chances

That was a better win with some more structure evident in our game than what we often see. Our disposals were pretty murderous for most of the game however. Essendon is a second tier side as are our other wins so far. A win is a win is a win but if we play like yesterday against top class sides we will have our ass handed back to us on a platter.
We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true.

This might be the sleeper of the season While they have not beaten a serious contender (GWS, Saints, Melbourne) they did not lose to Sydney by that much (20 pts, if memory serves) All those top ten draft picks will pay off eventually I fear their rise might coincide with ours, and they've had the AFL largesse a la Brisbane of 2002/2003.piedys wrote:Neither did anybody at the game. if or when we get a turn, i expect that to win a flag we'll have to beat the likes of port, gws, the welfare, gcs (in spite of their current predicament) and essendon. the hawks, freo and the swans will be there or thereabouts but possibily on a downward trajectory similar to what geelong has been experiencing over the last three to four years.Mugwump wrote:This might be the sleeper of the season While they have not beaten a serious contender (GWS, Saints, Melbourne) they did not lose to Sydney by that much (20 pts, if memory serves) All those top ten draft picks will pay off eventually I fear their rise might coincide with ours, and they've had the AFL largesse a la Brisbane of 2002/2003.piedys wrote:Neither did anybody at the game. A great win , we showed a lot of guts and jam tart all day. Very happy with our backline and young Jack Crisp's tagging job was expectional on Watson and later on Heppell. A great team effort , White and Gault struggled but will hopefully improve on friday. Goldsack back to his tough best. Grundy never stopped all day. Marley Williams turned the corner along with Seedy.
