I agree. Look the corroboree idea might have been a real positive if he'd done it in the middle of the ground or ran at the Swans' cheer squad. But to run and throw a spear at the Carlton supporters was a deliberately provocative thing. Red rag to a bull. And Goodes is intelligent enough to know it would stir up more trouble. Which was exactly what he had in mind.Fire Up wrote:hope he gets a please explain from the afl. there is no need to run X amount of metres to the blues area for a war cry.
also he better call the blues supporter that was kicked out of the ground from it. the blues supporter was not kicked out for a racist remark.
and goodsy wonders why he gets booed all the time.

Why do we still need an indigenous round or rounds for anything? Can we please just have our footy back again! I'm sick of the absolute politicisation of everything in society. It's beyond a joke. Everything has a so-called noble cause.King Monkey wrote: Food for thought - could we see a version of an Aboriginal war dance performed before each game in Indigenous round next year??
I think it'd add to the atmosphere and build up whilst being relevant to the celebrations.

Listening to Triple M at the moment - now it has become a "NRL is more accepting of Indigenous players then AFL" discussion.
And anyone who didn't like the display (for whatever reason) is a racist.
Adam Goodes has succeeded once again - dividing the community when we should have been celebrating a great footy game and the contribution of indigenous players.

The text below was a comment in The Guardian story on what Adam Goodes did. I think it is very fair and balanced, and the most thoughtful comment I have read anywhere. Please read it and think about it.
Ingrained unthinking attitudes, prejudices and ignorance are not cast aside easily (let's not be too harsh on ignorance, which is simply not knowing very much about a subject, but having an opinion nonetheless). People have to be pushed to be a little bit more enlightened and some individuals take it upon themselves to do the pushing. Sometimes their message is well calibrated, sometimes a it is a little clumsy, but the Pushers will be criticised by Resistors as a matter of course.
For example, right now we finally have a Bill being introduced into Parliament to give equal marriage rights to the 3-8% of the population who are asking for it and that they deserve it is self-evident. We happen to have a narrow minded Resistor PM bleating pathetically that "My Budget" is more important because well, he just doesn't get it. The Bill will pass eventually and their Resistance won't stop these small minded egocentrics claiming it as a humanitarian triumph come the next election.
On Goodes, first off, excellent war cry execution. He practised it, like the All Black practise the Hakka (which is a lot more threatening but everyone is used to it and the Resistors have long since learned to shut up about).
Whatever Goodes' conscious motivations, it was also saying "Well boo this!!!". He is pushing, needling a little bit. But on the flip side, many indigenous Australians who saw it could have not helped but feel a sense of pride.
How it came to pass that Goodes is booed is probably complex, a combination of factors. But the colour of his skin and Goodes' increasing awareness of his race as his career has progressed is one of those factors. His ramrod upright posture, bouncing, almost arrogant gait, commanding presence, stellar achievements and increasingly outspokenness reeks of "Uppityness" (a description that would justify the lynching of a black man in many western nations less than 100 years ago). White folks don't mind black sportsmen kicking goals, scoring baskets or winning races, but they are much more comfortable when they are "humble" - code for knowing their place.
As well as making white people uncomfortable, Goodes' style of play provides some handles for the threatened to hang their hat on. Dodgy knees mean his physical capabilities are somewhat diminished, which seems sometimes at odds with his mental ambitions. Often when he collects the ball he does something unexpected and brilliant, sometimes he appears to have so many ideas at once that they all cancel each other out and he fails abjectly....and occasionally he stages. The brilliance, failure and staging all come from the same place, but he was once so good that even the diminished version now is good enough.
Opposition fans with a taste for resistance to dispelling ignorance may never forgive him for being guilty of the cardinal sin of getting political, but when his career is over Adam Goodes, for all his faults, will have pushed them a little bit in the right direction.
The Sydney Swans should retire #37 when Goodes retires and hang it in the stands of the SCG so in 10, 20 or 50 years time a child can ask their parent who it was that wore that number and what did he do.

I agree - some things were much better in days gone by. How many blokes do you see giving up their seat for a woman on the tram or train these days?Golden Gordon wrote:Why do we still need an indigenous round or rounds for anything? Rather than dividing the community, perhaps he's exposing the divisions already in the community and encouraging some thoughtful discussion about a serious issue, including how those divisions affect some members of our community. It all depends on what angle you are kicking from.Dark Beanie wrote:Listening to Triple M at the moment - now it has become a "NRL is more accepting of Indigenous players then AFL" discussion.

This is such illogical bloody crap about Goodes causing division!! ANYONE with an opposing view to someone else "causes division". Andrew Bolt causes division with his comments on multiculturalism; Abbott causes division with his comments about refugees, Eddie causes division with his comments on most matters etc etc. We ALL cause "division" to some societal extent with opinions differing from other opinions!! Such is life!!Dark Beanie wrote:Adam Goodes has succeeded once again - dividing the community
Blithely accusing Goodes of dividing the community is absolute bloody rubbish when logically, you do too with your own opinion!!

Exactly right. EVERY community has existing divisions that are either supported or gone against by other opinions and views. No one has the single mantle to themselves about "dividing" a community.Greening gold wrote:Rather than dividing the community, perhaps he's exposing the divisions already in the community and encouraging some thoughtful discussion about a serious issue, including how those divisions affect some members of our community. I said division as it seems people either have to agree with Adam Goodes actions or not, not anything in between.
Excuse me for being illogical or simple minded.

Balanced
He stages because he's getting older??
Bolded....white folks, black folks, green folks, all....ALL, prefer and love a humble champion of any creed or color.
It's an excuse piece...zero balanced about it.
I've thought about it....he's a w@nk...he'd be a w@nk even if he were fluorescent orange in color.

At least if you are arguing against a point of view, detail your response with facts instead of merely calling him names.....

Using sport as a political platform just defeats the core essence of sport itself and is something that the mass media has propagated since probably the 60's and the emergence of Muhammad Ali, and the John Carlos- Tommy Smith 1968 Olympics black power salute.
Let's just get back to treating sport as an escape and release from the grind of your daily life, something to be viewed and enjoyed for the game itself rather than as a soapbox for some political cause that probably has little relevance to most of us anyway.
About the only Football round I feel is truly worthy of keeping is grassroots round. Nothing annoys me more than seeing that players were recruited from Calder Cannons or Northern Knights without ever acknowledging that these players are actually from and learnt their footy at various other suburban or country football clubs. It's time that these clubs and communities were acknowledged more for their contributions to our game.
