That was very interesting when he was asked about his signature. He talks about his priority being to get a game and stay in the team, but when pressed and asked directly by Mick McGuane if he wanted to stay at Collingwood, his reply was, to me at least, underwhelming:
"Yea, I'm really enjoying being back playing, it's a lot better than being stuck in rehab. I'm really enjoying being out there with the boys and as I say, just to get as much senior footy under my belt before the end of the year would be great."
Mick McGuane: "So when will these (contract) decisions take place? Because i would be a priority for Collingwood to put your signature away."
Shaz: Yeah, I think from my point of view, as I said, I'm just putting my footy first and that gives me the chance to perform to the best of my ability and that will be better for the team and I'm sure that it will play its course.....and yeah,,,umm, that it will get sorted out."
Now that's a bit concerning to my ears. He was given a direct question about staying at Collingwood and he chose to give a non-answer; a politicians answer. He could have said things like, the club has been fantastic to me and my signature is a lock as soon as the season is over, but yeah, I'm definitely keen to stay.......he said nothing like that. It sounded like he had been schooled in how to answer the question and how to avoid a direct answer.
From that interview I get the impression Matt is off home come October.

Unfortunately Neil, that's exactly how I heard it. The hysteria is amazing, how did you come to that conclusion from this interview??? Other footballers in a similar situation (looking for more money) have never come out and said what you wanted to hear! relax Max it'll happen. It's obvious he'll ask for more money and will be entitled to it if he continues to impress.

He seems quite and introverted to me. Lots of alarmists out there. Don't read into things too much. Not unusual for players to hold out and most of them usually re-sign.

Im drilling his cousin for info at the moment. Clinton his cuz is a port supporter and Matty was a red hot crows supporter. Whats that mean, stuff all I suppose. I know his GF is happy in Melbourne. Just hope the pulling power in S.A is not too great. Hope he stays.

I hope he stays. His answer was non-committal but then again many players answer in the same way so it's not surprising. He doesn't want to draw attention to his situation but hopefully if he keeps playing he'll realise the value of playing for the Pies in front of big crowds at the G week in week out.
A normal response would have been to say something like, "I definitely want to stay at Collingwood and repay them for the investment and support they've given me over the past 2 years while i've been recovering from injuries, but I'll be leaving it up to my manager to sort out all the details at the end of the year."
Instead, we got an incredibly carefully scripted and non-committal response. I might be totally wrong about this kid, indeed I hope I am, but I sense from his manner, as well as the way he plays, that he is not emotionally committed to Collingwood. He just wants to play senior footy. That's his right of course, but if correct, it's disappointing. If he goes to Adelaide, I want Dangerfield.

You could draw a few conclsusions from his interview.
Most players these days never come straight out and say they are going or staying.
It's a management ploy to garner every last dollar they can for there client which in today's game is fair.
The more senior football he plays the better he plays the value of his signature becomes simple economics really.
I want the kid to stay badly I believe the hype about him is close to the mark I refer back to a comment Leigh Matthews made at a luncheon I attended when asked about Scharenberg he stated "I thought he was a top 3 pick easy and could have gone #1 if not for his foot issues. I think Collingwood got a steal with him he is a real player the kind I would have loved to have coached"
While I don't rate Matthews that highly as a coach I do rate his opinion as a person who knows good footballers and on that basis and the limited vision I have seen of the kid he has the one thing you can't coach and great players have and that's time when under pressure (yes very like our skipper)
I'm sure the club will do everything possible to get him signed and if not play hard ball with anyone who wants him. Ready made player/s plus 1st round draft picks minimum from SA clubs or very early (1-5) first round from any other club sounds fair to me.
