Posted last evening on the AFL ebsite at 10.47 pm:

PROMISING defender Matthew Scharenberg is edging closer and closer to turning his back on strong interest from Adelaide and re-commiting to Collingwood after a drawn-out negotiation process.

Although Scharenberg is unlikely to put pen to paper until Collingwood's VFL team has completed its 2015 finals campaign, AFL.com.au understands the South Australian has indicated he wants to remain a Magpie beyond 2015.

Scharenberg, the No.6 pick in the 2013 national draft, is due to come out of contract at the end of October when he completes his initial two-year contract with the Magpies.

Growing speculation has surrounded the defender's future the longer he's remained un-signed this year, with Adelaide linked strongly to him.

However, it is believed Scharenberg, who turns 20 next Friday, will resist the temptation to return home and will recommit to Collingwood soon after its VFL team's season is over.

So now it looks as though Shaza has in fact passed the baton - I wonder who will be next after they both signup. Oxley?

People questioning Shaz's talent ... the VFL today (first half) should put to bed any doubts on why we are desperate to sign him. A class above. Yes, I know it's VFL, but gee, he looks the goods. 20 touches and intercept after intercept. He's got a foitballer's brain and looks a genuine future marshal of troops in defence. Just looks switched on...

As a defender he looks a very similar type to Jimmy, though he is more versatile and can give us more up the ground.

Not really, he was forced to take a taller and heavier opponent once Marsh went down.
Is there any place you would rather be, than with me at the MCG?

His first half showed why so many experts have big raps for the kid. However, his best work seemed to be as a loose man in defence, intercepting forward entries. Nevertheless, his reading of the play was excellent. In the 2nd half, after Marsh's injury, he had to play much more accountable football and was exposed for his lack of strength. Still, overall, it was his best effort yet, so if he ends up committing to us, let's hope his highlights from today are a promise of his potential.
