to be completely honest...this is the best news I have heard in yonks! it does not suprise me in the slightest that a few of our players have had inferior fitness levels. The best thing about what Broadridge has said is that he has said it publicly - and if that doesn't get our boys thinking, then we are in the craphouse. i have always doubted shawry's ability to physically train his charges to the levels of say...the crows, whom I know through being friends with one of them, who go through what he describes as 'torture' to get to the levels they see necessary! Bravo broadridge - lets get stuck into them. they will be thankful when they reap the success!
Its very refreshing for coaches to publicly state the obvious. This way there is no further speculations.
Havn't we always said that players get paid plenty good money to do their job ?.
As soon as players start getting comfortable and relying on their reputations, we (THE CLUB) will start to go backwards.
This also applies to letting players stay at the club 1 or 2 years too long.
This has happened at our club over the last 5 years, and I always fully support the club in publicly stating what standards they require from their players.
At the elite level, nothing must be compromised. By making this 'appraisal' public, the coaches have also raised supporter expectations. Even we, had started to accept 'trying' as satisfactory. I am accustomed to loosing. Loosing should be a shock to our system, I want to get accustomed to WINNING. Otherwise, I might as well barrick for St. Kilda.
Tony Shaw also tried to set standards, ie. No drinking, No late nights etc. These were also appropriate standards. But to me , its a bit like telling a shop assistant 'don't steal money from the till' its obvious isn't it ?.
The club still has a way to go to change the culture where obvious things do not have to be said. If a player isn't fit enough , there should be 41 other players telling him. Not the coaches.
