No no no no... don't be mean, Bucks once moved Reid from the backline to the forward line... oh btw wasn't Reid recruited as a forward? Maybe the first sight of a new game day tactic that Bux has delivered in 5 years.

And with Blair I think I shrank his talent.
No one can blame Blair, he is trying his hardest unlike Cloke.
But the modern game of run, carry and spread has passed him by.
we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest.
and yet there is a place for Popuolo, who modeled his game on the Blair role of 2010/11 (except that now he has more support than Blair does so less is expected of him and he is freer to be more dangerous).thompsoc wrote:Well honey I think shrank the kids!think positive wrote:I like blair I think he will stayThe Boy Who Cried Wolf wrote:No no no no... don't be mean, Bucks once moved Reid from the backline to the forward line... oh btw wasn't Reid recruited as a forward? The TV commentators call Blair the poor man's Popuolo.
Unfortunately, the Pop has more speed, run, carry, spread and goal kicking talent than Blair.
Look... the game has passed him by!
If he keeps playing then sure there will be days when he will do really well.
Last year in one early game I gave him best on ground.
He just has limited talent, that is all and the modern game is speeding away from him, and as such, over any season his impact will be below average.
Can someone please inform me why we should play him, what do we get?
Could anyone in our VFL side do better or should we try and get games into our youngsters.
I am a very laid back person.
But I realize in footy winning the flag is everything. There is no room for sentiment or fairness or whatever. It is a ruthless business.
In life I am probably the biggest hippy around but with footy I am a fascist.

I'm talking from last year to this year, Didick.didick wrote:Hi KM, what changes have been made to our "forward/defensive structures" have you observed? Are you talking about the MM to NB change? Or changes made through Bucks' tenure alone? In all seriousness, Blair has been nowhere near as effective at his role this year so far than he has been in previous seasons.
The change to our "forward/defensive structures" hasn't helped him in that regard.
Broomhead must be very very close to taking his place this week if De Goey holds on to his.
Cheers
I'll preface my comments by stating that I'm not sure whether the change is due to coaching instructions, or players not doing what they're supposed to be doing, but there's certainly been a change in between seasons nonetheless.
We seem to be going between committing numbers down the line allowing the switch from pocket to pocket completely, or committing numbers to the fat side and not allowing the switch at all - where as last year we'd almost sort of "dare" the opposition to switch it with manic pressure rolling over to the fat side if they tried it.
So, this year - when we've cut the switch off and forced the opposition down the line, we've been outnumbered at the fall of the ball at HF/wing because we've committed too many numbers to chop off the switch.
But, when we've allowed the switch at times, the opposition has been able to manufacture the overlap with ease, due to us being outnumbered over on the fat side.
So the change I've seen to our "forward/defensive" structure is a lack of pressing up to try and force the turnover. We're instead trying to force the opposition to kick it to certain parts of the ground and win the contest, which unfortunately is a losing plan when you're outnumbered in the areas of the ground you've forced them to kick it to!!
Blair has suffered because he's really only any use to the side if he's putting pressure on the opposition coming out of their back half, not arriving a second later to man the mark because we're sagging off.

A player who cannot do the 99 percenters:
* kick goals
* take marks
* lay tackles that stick
* out run an opponent
* handball in traffic
* take the first option
somehow has had a golden pass for the last 60 games of his career. I thankyou Jarryd for the first 65 games, but please "match committee" look at the facts. A forward who can't kick a goal (s) is obsolete.

And by your same reasoning we picked up Young, who was a member of the 2008 Hawthorn premiership team.E wrote:This begs an interesting question.thompsoc wrote:The lollipop brigade have slightly changed their tune over the last year or 2.
It has gone from he plays his role, to he will go one day when the next batch comes thru.
This ignores the fact that he really isn't up to AFL standard, and has not been for the last 3 or 4 years.
Lets have a look at some of the players delisted or left over the years such as K Martin. Yes, probably not up to standard but I guarantee he would have kicked more goals than Blair.
I look at Ferguson, Close and others in the VFL and I believe they are just as capable as Blair. Maybe Jack Blair is as good as his brother.
The reason myself and others have harped on this is that it is obvious he is ordinary at best and that he offers nothing, nothing going forward.
Good luck to him playing 120 games and getting a day and night premiership and making plenty of money out his limited ability.
He can hold his head up high and say I did far better than the key board warriors on Nicks.
But he is still a dud to me.
What does it mean to be "not up to AFL Standard"
He was good enough to play in a premiership team in his very first year on the senior list at Collingwood. And he beat out a pretty good group of players (including Leon Davis - an all-Australian) to make the team.
Actually he is in the best 22 of the ONLY premiership team Collingwood has had in the past 25 YEARS!!!!!!
Not up to AFL standard. Give me a frick'n break.
Didn't take us long on this board to realise he wasn't much of a footballer.

I would take a different perspective. Our recycled player success has been atrocious. Problem with development?BucksIsFutureCoach wrote:And by your same reasoning we picked up Young, who was a member of the 2008 Hawthorn premiership team.E wrote:This begs an interesting question.thompsoc wrote:The lollipop brigade have slightly changed their tune over the last year or 2.

As good as Blair has been in the past it was probably the style of game that suited him. It was slower and relied on the forward press and keeping pressure on the opponent. Now it's about run and carry at all costs. We're not playing well and guys like Blair are getting found out for their lack of leg speed and poor disposal. I don't doubt that he tries hard but there comes a time when the game passes everyone by. He will always be a premiership player and has served the club well but I can't imagine that we'll be rushing to sign him up for another 2-3 years especially with other blokes coming through.
I see this as an opportunity for Broomhead to stand up and show us what he's made of. He's had the injury set back I know but he probably won't get a better chance than now. We need an injection of pace and someone with goal sense. If he's fit and ready then he's a straight swap for blair.
