Virus Alert

Post by Mike »

I have had 6 emails sent to me this morning containing a virus called Win32.SirCam.137216.

This is an email worm, one of those viruses that replicates by sending copies of itself to everyone in your address book. This one is unusual in that it also contains a destructive payload that may delete all files and directories on the disc on which Windows is installed.

Emails carrying the worm contain the message:
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Hi! How are you?
I send you this file in order to have your advice
See you later. Thanks <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

The middle line of the message can vary and may contain any of the following:
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>I send you this file in order to have your advice
I hope you can help me with this file that I send
I hope you like the file that I sendo you
This is the file with the information that you ask for<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Delete the message without opening the attachment.

A reminder to never open email attachments unless you are expecting them, even if they come from people you know.

Thanks Mike. I did receive an email, but deleted it immediately, as I did not know who it was from.

Also received warning of the same virus from Melbourne University, so watch out folks!

Thanks Mike. Yeah I got that today and deleted it straight away, before even seeing this Virus Alert.

I got that virus about 6 times over the last couple of previous days, Magnificent Mike. I read the emails but didn't open the attachment - which is just a rule with me unless I totally trust the source and am expecting it.

But I was curious - will this virus keep you out for 8 weeks like the virus that kept Scotty Burns out of the Team for 8 weeks?

I'm glad you added 'and am expecting it' because these worms can happily come from your most trusted contacts. Your system will even send them to itself!

This could be worse than the Scott Burns virus. If the payload triggers, it's terminal - you don't even get a shot at the VFL.
