I don't think our hand balling is too bad. What shits me is our kicking backwards. There's a couple of culprits who seem to like to do it regularly. And when it happens we've been letting their forwards pressure and eventually turn it over. It was the most threatening Freo looked all night! When we were kicking backwards!

Sure, you need to go when you need to go, but you need to play to your strengths all the same.
Swanny isn't exactly the greatest defensive runner, but JUST does what he needs to in that regard.
He wouldn't be a dual Brownlow medalist if he was forced to focus more on defensive running.
(I don't consider Judd to have won in 2010.)

This is why blokes like Blair and Greenwood are an important part of the side in the modern game.
Yep agree. But the guy has some wheels so disappoints that they aren't used more for defensive running.

Sidey was reasonably quiet.
I thought Sidey was pretty good. He was being tagged by Barlow and Ross Lyon admitted after the game that Sidey won that duel well.
He was the difference in the first quarter, set it up really. Faded a bit after that.

Standard wasn't a high class game but I thought the longer the game went the more settled and unrushed we seemed.
The last term was very pleasing. We could have just shut up shop and held on for a 2-3 goal win but we kept attacking the ball and doing all the little things.
Really happy for Travis he showed tonight why he is so valuable to this team.
With Brown back in defence allowed Marsh Howe Reid to leave there man and intercept at will.
Really excited about Phillips and Smith both showed again they are going to be good players.
Greenwood should be given the award for most annoying tagger ever he never gave Neale a inch all night and was also important getting some himself
Grundy was so dominate in all aspects was great
We didn't have a bad player really everyone did there job and that's pleasing. Treloar is interesting he had loads of it and worked his butt off both ways but his disposal at times was iffy but heck he just seems to pop up every time a team mate is looking for a option to kick or handball to
Overall it was a good platform and hopefully will lead to continued improvement and who knows how many more wins we can get if we show up with the same desire every quarter for the rest of the year
Treloar... runs both ways... Seriously? Probably one of the worst defensive runners in our midfield. Works tirelessly at the coal face and can break away with great pace, but if he doesn't win it he disengages pretty quickly.
He actually mentioned that as a weakness he is trying to rectify in his post match interview

And used his pace to make ground to insert a fist when needed. Big wrap for this kid, still has an enormous amount of development in him but he'll be solid best 22 if he can continue to bring that.
And wasn't it fantastic to see the long sleeved number 17 jumper back out on the 'G; warmed the cockles of my heart

Agree started on the wing and ended up at the goal square
And not for the first time
Hopefully it is lack of experience and/or players not talking both can be rectified

Kicking backwards is about under pressure. You go backwards it's easier for the opposition and most of the times its done under pressure or they tried to switch play and stuffed that up. If you kick 50 metres forward and turn it over the opposition still has to come back 50 metres.
The more you hand pass the percentage of turn over increases.

This is junior football stuff.

The current style of AFL football is stuffed. It's glorified basketball.

For what it's worth I just checked his Heat Map stats.

From the game on Friday: Disposals: 46% - Defensive Half, 54% - Forward Half

Season:56% - Defensive Half, 44% - Forward Half

Typical downhill skier.

What do the numbers mean? Well frigged if I know, but your claim kind of doesn't stack up.
Go Pies!

^^ AnthonyC,

It was a comment made during the week on the radio too. Maybe even the Fox coverage too, I can't remember.

it's not the first time I've heard it about Treloar.

I've never really noticed either way to be honest. Needless to say it will now be more in my mind and I'll probably look next week.
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeey, we want some Bayley!

Keep in mind that defensive half is not necessarily defensive third... every midfielder in every team would be around 50/50 given that the centre circle dictates which half you are in... teams with worse records would automatically have mids that have spent more time in the 'back half'.
Get back on top.

Good point Cam, here's a bit more of a breakdown:

I think this counts season disposals:

Defensive 50: 59
Defensive Half/Flank: 161

Forward 50: 37
Forward Half/Flank: 140
Go Pies!
