Robert Copeland was given the big job on Nathan Buckley in the grand final.
Richmond's feverish assault on the recruiting market appeared to garner more success yesterday when Robert Copeland indicated that he intended to leave the Brisbane Lions and nominate for the pre-season draft.
Against the appeal of Brisbane's extraordinary triple premiership success, next year's tilt at history and the comforts of living in his home state, Copeland has nominally accepted a three-year Richmond offer to bring his 53-game career to Melbourne.
When the Lions assemble in Coorparoo today, to begin their 2004 campaign, the dual premiership wingman will not be there. For one, he is not due to return from a fishing trip until Friday, but more significantly, he told his manager, Ron Joseph, yesterday morning that he was "likely" to nominate for the pre-season draft.
Why would anyone in their right mind consider a move from Brisbane, where he was a good regular player in a great team, to Rabblemond, where he will be a gun player in a shite team?
If so, he is about to learn a very hard lesson in life - there is more to life than ca$h.
Not advisable for these 2 newlyweds. What happens when he comes home each week after another loss with his tiger-tail between his legs? And his wife is moaning about how cold it is down here?
"Gee, we shoulda stayed in Brisbane.." "Well DUH?! You were the one who wanted to go for the money" "Now shut up and throw another $100 note on the fire, it's getting low........."
Richscum don't have the onfield talent and their supporters are the biggest bandwagon in the AFL and are always after blood.
Frawley and Co. obviously don't have the ability to develop their own stocks but have choosen to follow the Carlton school of thought and poach players by offerring them huge dollars.
Well it has been shown that spending big bucks for overrated players will only get you two things. Discontent amongst the existing playing group and a huge debt when it all turns to shite.
I hope the AFL check their books, they are surely close to blowing their salary cap. The addition of Brown at 500k a year is sure to help the AFL auditors.
Copeland isn't moving for big bucks. I understand he wanted $100,000 a year which I think his performances warrant. Brisbane however weren't prepared to offer him that preferring to spend up big on interstate players.
I think Brisbane are taking the extra salary cap for player retention too literally, preferring to retain interstate players than local ones.

Tiggers have just drafted Caaaaarlton hack Simon Fletcher. No doubt to boost their intimidating midfield. In the VFL that is.
