So, According to the official figures, 37% either didn't vote or "spoiled" their ballot papers (that which we would call an "informal" vote). Of the remaining 63%, candidate 1 got about 66% (so, about 42% of the electorate voted for him) and candidate 2 got about 34% (so about 21% of the electorate voted for her). In short, 4 out of every 5 French potential voters didn't want learn goose-stepping, just yet. That probably compares favourably to the extent of initial public support for the Vichy regime.

Why would one blame a cruel, failed revolution which resulted in a military tyranny and millions of deaths on Marxists ?watt price tully wrote:^ Text minus context but stick to the the American Library of Congress translation & you won't go too far wrong.
Then again you could always blame it on the Marxists.
As for the US Congress translation, well, you "won't go far wrong with it" if you prefer history and words rewritten and falsified, to serve a political convenience. The Marseillaise is what it is : a ferocious declaration by a people of their determination to defend their homeland against outsiders who wish to subjugate it. It's why that scene in Casablanca is so moving.
Back on topic, the lazy equation of Marine Le Pen with German Nazism is a substitute for thought. If one does not understand what Marine Le Pen really represents, then one will fail to understand what is really wrong with her view of the world, and why she would be bad for France. She is not a Hitler figure, as she has neither the military reflex nor the seething hatred.
National Socialism might have been Adolf's "ism" of choice, but it was never an adequate characterization of his programme. He was in reality a military imperialist. Her programme, on the other hand, actually does seem to be nationalist and socialist : it is inward looking, economically dirigiste, and inclined to autarky. All of those are recipes for accelerated economic stagnation and decline. As that decline accelerates, it is possible that the hostility to "foreigners" within France would take on a nastier racial character, given the FN's ancestral DNA.
For all that, I think France is unreformable, and especially by someone like Macron with no serious party structure and with deep roots in the existing elite. Macron is an Enarque, an alumnus of a merchant bank, the former Finance Minister in the preposterous Hollande government, and he is wedded to the existing metropolitan Left view which has been failing France for the last sixtyyears. I hold slim hope for any serious change, and then I expect that Le Pen will be back, stronger than ever, as the crisis deepens. It is actually to her advantage to have lost this election, as she can only prosper in a serious crisis.

Sorry for being a bit trivial, but does it astound anyone else to think that Emmanuel Macron's wife might well have gone to jail if their relationship had occurred in Australia? I'm not precisely sure of the details of when and how their relationship began, but there seems to be a suggestion that it was already underway when he was under 18 and a student in one of her classes.
Perhaps it also goes to show that, as dodgy as such things can seem, sometimes love really does win out.

it doesn't astound me at all that it's illegal. Most laws can be unjust in very rare circumstances, and this might be one. It is, however, a very unusual relationship on many levels. I'm sure there is insinuation about when macron started his relationship with his teacher, now his wife, mostly from his opponents. IIRC the timing was several years after he finished school and he pursued her.
In summary:
1. Long bow to draw
2. Our laws are appropriate and correct
3. Nothing to see here.

Seems like deja vu all over again. Haven't we met before, that's right you were explaining how The Democratic Republic raelly was democratic

That went through to the keeper. If you deconstruct a joke then ..it's a problem with conservative literalism. It's not irony, irony is when you get run over by an ambulance.

Yes but it was a lot more than than that, it had a much wider application. In one aspect at least Ricks cafe was a meeting place & a melting pot for people escaping fascism.
Noe can you explain the plot of a Charles Bronson film

If one begins with a false premise then one is logically bound to conclude conclusion I think you're speaking to an audience that does not include moi. What I have said pertains perhaps to Petain. Her father was a holocaust denier & members of her party have been a recently as April. The people who voted for her are not all holocaust deniers or even nazi sympathisers. They are scared people mostly - besides that they're French

Looks like the Rothschild banker isn't as left as the leftists who voted for him thought he'd be. In fact he's pretty much Le Pen without the socialism.

Have you ever met an actual left-wing person, Wokko? They were dissing Macron months before he was elected. He's no friend of the left and never presented himself as anything of the sort.
