Did you hear the crowd after the final siren?About 35,000 Collingwood supporters agreed with his assessment of the umpires. And they weren't wrong.thompsoc wrote:So Mooretreloar fancy blaming the umps for such a loss.

We got beaten because we weren't strong enough or fast enough on the break.
Simple as that.
According to my brother we have lost 7 games by under 20 points.
This must be a record.

All good points. We should have been six goals ahead at half time given how much of the play we had. Melbourne were always going to come back hard on us in the second half. When they did we didn't quite have the composure to keep to our structures and not panic. That's the price you pay when you field a young team. Had we had that buffer of a six goal lead at half time we would have weathered the storm in the second half and won the game. That's life which you learn from.mooretreloar wrote:We kicked 100 points, a big plus. The forward line structure is working well.
However, to give up 104 points was extremely disappointing. The reasons were three fold: 1) poor disposal, 2) poor decision making, 3) the umpires.
Melbourne kicked 6.6 in the first half. We gave them every one of their goals. 1st quarter Sidey poor disposal, Adams poor disposal and decision, and two dubious free kicks. Howe was stupid to put his hands anywhere near Watts, as Langdon had it covered, but have seen much worse not paid. The chopping of the arm free kick to McDonald was technically there, but there are hundreds of these not paid every game, so to pay one 25 metres out is charity. 2nd quarter Adams poor disposal and decision, Landgon fumble gave them the only two goals for the quarter.
A 23 point half time lead should have been at least double.
Third quarter we were smashed at the contest and then when it went into their forward line we found a way to stuff up and hand them goals or let the umpires hand them goals. That 50 metre penalty to Petracca was a joke, he wasn't sure he marked it and was appealing to the umpire for it to be paid, so Sidey tackled him in case it wasn't a mark. Lack of understanding of the game by the umpire.
Last quarter we were just holding on with most of the first half of the quarter played in their half of the ground. Goals to De Goey and Phillips were against the flow and if De Goey marks the Adams kick with a minute and a half to go, we could have snatched it.
The umpiring was abysmal, Melbourne were paid every 50/50 decision and we got none of our 50/50's and they missed a lot of blatant ones our way, especially the De Goey drag down in the marking contest inside 50 in the 3rd quarter. The holding ball decisions were perplexing, they just seemed to have to tackle us and it was a free to them. They definitely influenced the result of the game, but our poor disposal and decision making also played a part.
The positives today were it was the youngest side we put on the park all season and we generally held up well. Brown had limited touches, but he did not look out of place and a number of his touches and his body positioning positively influenced the game.
In the pre game thread, I posted that the result of the game was dependent on us executing our skills and making the right decisions under pressure and us making the most of Grundy's advantage in the ruck. For the most part, we did these things well in the first half, but we failed in all of them in the second half. Thus, although the umpiring was horrendous, if in the second half we execute our skills, make the right decisions and make the most of Grundy's ruck advantage, then we would not been in a position to allow the umpiring to have any impact on the result.
All in all, the first twelve rounds have had positives and negatives. For mine, 5-7 is the worst win loss ratio we could have from the football we have played. We could easily be 7-5 or even 8-4. We have played better in the first 12 rounds of 2017 compared to 2016, with our worse loss being 23 points, which shows we are going in the right direction. However, it is disappointing that we are still losing games through poor disposal and dumb decision making, so I am looking for an improvement in these two areas in the last 10 games of 2017. If we do this, we are chance of winning enough games to play finals, but in the grand scheme of things finals in 2017 are irrelevant. We want to win flags and we aren't going to win it in 2017, so the aim for the rest of 2017 should be to continue to develop Crocker, Ramsay, Broomhead, Maynard, Scharenberg Moore, Brown, Daicos, Aish, De Goey, as these guys together with Fasolo, Elliott, Hoskin-Elliott, Grundy, Langdon, Treloar and Adams are going to form the nucleus of our next side to make an assault on a flag.
Your last point about the nucleus of our next side to make an assault on the flag, we need to find a couple of tall forwards to assist Moore. Without that we are just treading water in my view.

I just find it strange the constant focus of even conservative posters on Nix about the umps.doriswilgus wrote:Did you hear the crowd after the final siren?About 35,000 Collingwood supporters agreed with his assessment of the umpires. And they weren't wrong.thompsoc wrote:So Mooretreloar fancy blaming the umps for such a loss.

Today it was 23 to the Dees and 19 to us.
Over Bux's coaching career it is 50.5 % to us and 49.5% to them.
This constant carping about the umps is just weird.
we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest.

I don't think anyone has a problem with free kicks being paid, it's just the type of frees that are paid and when they are paid. 5 HTB decisions in the last quarter/half alone really makes you wonder and then you have the 50/50 ones not going your way. Some of the decisions paid today were bewildering and I don't blame any Collingwood supporter taking their frustrations out on the scumps during and after the game.thompsoc wrote:I just find it strange the constant focus of even conservative posters on Nix about the umps.doriswilgus wrote:Did you hear the crowd after the final siren?About 35,000 Collingwood supporters agreed with his assessment of the umpires. And they weren't wrong.thompsoc wrote:So Mooretreloar fancy blaming the umps for such a loss.

I think it's that there were some pretty clear decisions / non-decisions in a game that was very close.thompsoc wrote:This constant carping about the umps is just weird.
The 50m to Petracca vs the non-50 to Hoskin Elliot for the identical infringement. Both marks were dubious however both were paid so the interpretation of the next event should have been identical. It wasn't, hence the 'carping'.

Not read any other post but.... ( I'm a bit drunk)
The weeks rest for Melbourne and us back from Perth was the difference.
Well done to both teams, great game.
As for us... keep throwing the same punches as in the last month. The style of footy is much better and we are actually a realistically good team capable of anything.

It is where they get them and at what point in the match.
I reckon it is collective paranoia.

Three big freeze days, three demon wins. Let another team play, like as someone said, Essendon.PyreneesPie wrote:I know it sounds mean-spirited, but I have to agree. Neil Daniher is now a very inspirational figure at Melbourne and rightly so. However, I do think that gets into the psyche of the players and the umpires.Monco Matt wrote:With all due respect to ND.....once MND gets him and it will sadly, will the QB Monday game still continue to be The Big Freeze game? Or will it just revert back to the normal QB game? What I am getting at is have Melbourne taken over this fixture and made it theirs now, so every year we have to deal with them getting up for ND? With all due respect to ND and his family but fkuc this every year!
Still, who is going to shoot Bambi by suggesting they use another Melbourne game?
Get back on top.

In 2015 the big freeze started and we won that year. Melbourne have beaten us 4 times in a row. We lost to them the 2nd time we played in 2015, then lost twice last year and now today.Cam wrote:Three big freeze days, three demon wins.
