Haha, yup, TP, love Germany too. I spent our holidays last August in
Berlin, and the year before that in Bavaria. The Germans are a great people, and I find their terrible history, and their determination to face up to it, both terrifying and inspiring.

I also have lots of German (and French and Belgian and Russian) acquaintance-friends though business, and as I've come to understand them over many long dinners, I have also come to realise how differently they see the world in terms of its geopolitics. From those conversations, I have gradually come to see, I think, past the simplistic things we were taught, and to form a view which takes account of the various perspectives of the players. I find it a case study in how conventional wisdom is often quite partial at best, and often just flat wrong. Thanks for reading it, whether you agree or not. Cheers

It must have been incredibly hard for Germany and Germans to get past what happened, without spending their lives apologizing for the "sins of the father."

saw a doco once on children of several of the guards, and Hitlers personal henchmen. i just cant imagine what they have been through.
maybe ill get there one day - hubby was talking about maybe going to England for our 25th anniversary, and the Greek islands, depending on the political climate, might have to make a detour!! cheers, bedtime!!

Shudder. If you think life would have been better under the Kaiser's Germany, and the ruthless Prussian mindset which underlay it, then I think you need to read some more history in this period. Read the history of Namibia and the Herrero and the Nama people, read about Dinant and Louvain, and consider the fact that the Germans were the first to undertake poison gas warfare, civilian bombardment from the air and unrestricted submarine warfare. There is a far greater connection between the Kaiser's Germany and Nazi Germany than you may suppose.

The concept of a bunch of Korean fishermen all lined up having an uncle doug into the ocean with the aim of attracting fish is definitely a WTF.

What the hell were you googling to find that? Or shouldn't I ask. :P
