People don't need any real "motive" for these atrocities. They just need guns, ammunition, a bit of anger and a degree of alienation. A couple of points
Firstly, fully automatic weapons are regulated in the US. Semi auto's aren't. The difference is a semi auto is self loading but you need to pull the trigger for each shot. Apparently at least 1 of the weapons the Police found had been modified, probably by a gun smith (which is illegal). You can also purchase (as David pointed out earlier) devices that can attach to a semi auto to make them rapid fire. It effects accuracy but if you're strafing 20,000 people from 400m away, accuracy isn't a big deal. Without some modifications you'd need Parkinsons and a hair trigger to get that rapid fire rate out of a semi auto

Interesting, the divide is not just political but between people who own guns and people who don't.
The other interesting point is that in the last 14 years, the number of gun owners who own a gun for protection has increased by 22% and the number who own them for hunting has decreased by 17%. There's probably still just as many people hunting but the number who buy for protection has jumped massively.
In Texas, which is an open carry state, there are signs on entrances to sports stadiums and bars saying no guns allowed in here.

When I handed my guns into the Police near 10 yerars ago, there was more than 20. I also sold another 15 to a gun dealer when my Dad died. it's not that hard., or at least it wasn't.
