Djokovic defeats Nadal in straight sets taking him to 15 slams, meaning he has surpassed Sampras in the overall slam count.
Djokovic's victory also means he has won his 7th Australian Open title, making him the GOAT of the tournament.

I was going to speculate that the Aus. is Djokovic's surface, the French Nadal's, Wimbedon Federer's, so that the US Open may be the one where the three are most evenly matched... but most of Federer's Wimbledon titles were before the three were at near peak strength...
In the manner of this thread, I've been intending to expand the thread currently titled "Leo Borg" to document the Borg-McEnroe rivalry. (It already has the link to Wimbledon's full video of their tiebreaker to beat all tiebreakers, in arguably the greatest tennis match of all time.) I hope contributors to this thread will join me there too!

Since the 2004 French Open (Gaston Gaudio must be grateful for his timing, getting in just before the Rafa era!), by my count there have been 59 Grand Slams. Of these, Murray has won 3, Wawrinka 3, Cilic 1, del Potro 1, and Safin 1. If that's a correct count, that makes an even 50 Grand Slams (out of the last 59) won by the trio of this thread.

Federer!!! Oh my, this man is simply a marvel in every aspect. His mental fortitude must be just extraordinary. Just when I thought, very sadly, that he may be on the way out, after only reaching the final 16 at our Open, he wins his 100th ATP title next start in Dubai!!!!! Against the young star who beat him last time around, no less.
I feel so blessed and privileged to have been able to watch the long career of this absolute tennis genius.

^ I attended the Tsitsipas v Federer AO match. It was a great spectacle and Tsitsipas is a future slam winner in the making.
Federer's only the second player to win 100 career titles, with Jimmy Connors the leader at 109 career titles. In my opinion, I still think Djokovic is the GOAT but when all is said and done we'll look back on this era with fond memories.

Kyrios unleashes on Djokovic...
'Although, he does apply a bit of ice to the bruise by damning him with some faint praise about his abilities on the court.
"Heβs an unbelievable player, heβs a champion of the sport; one of the greatest weβll ever see. He probably will, honestly, I reckon he will get the grand slam count, I reckon he will overpass Federer.
But then, the sucker-punch: "We're talking about a guy who pulled out of the Australian Open one year because it was too hot. No matter how many grand slams he wins, he will never be the greatest for me."'
(P. Lutton's article on B. Rothenberg's podcast interview with Kyrios here:
https://nochallengesremaining.podbean.c ... k-kyrgios/ )
Fact check needed. How fair is the "pulled out of the Oz Open because it was too hot" claim? How many matches has Djokovic pulled out of injured in his career?

^ I notice a lot of Australians hold a grudge against Djokovic for pulling out of the AO quarter final against Andy Roddick in 2009. There's always been an uneasy hostility toward Djokovic because he was seen as arrogant and cocky in his early days, but I think he started maturing and becoming a better player from 2011 onwards. I do agree with Kyrgios that Djokovic will surpass Federer's tally by the end of his career.
Over the course of his career, Djokovic has retired from a match 12 times, and withdrawn once before the match commenced. 10 of those retirements happened between 2005-2011.
It should be noted that Djokovic was suffering from gluten tolerance and altered his diet around 2010/2011.
