Call it what you like, it's not a mistake.
Stevo knew what he was doing was a breach of the rules.
He knew what he was doing was wrong.
Calling it a mistake gets him off the hook, and undeservedly so.
The punishment's harsh but what he did was deliberate. It was no mistake.

yes, and meanwhile the AFL profits from the gambling industry massively, they even had a gambling ad, right above the article about Stevo, on their own bloody website page, as tom Elliott pointed out, they promote gambling to young folks constantly, their blatant hypocrisy is nothing short of breathtaking, there are no words to describe it, none. :o

The "mistake" Stevo made, it seems, was to self-report. Chances are he may well have got away with it, as the many others out there have so far. How many will be forthcoming now with this massive whack? Certainly none of those that have bet more than $36 or bet on more than 3 occasions!!!
Had he not self-reported and been found out in another way, he would have been banned for the full 22 games.

The AFL said as much earlier today.

Doing something that you know is against the rules, but underestimating the gravity of it, also qualifies as a mistake.
Regardless however of what you define to be a "mistake", it is the AFL that should stand in the dock right now, not Jaidyn Stephenson.
It is the AFL who have created a situation where a few young, psychologically immature men are certain to make mistakes, (or act deliberately,as you would see it) and break gambling protocols..

Agree 100%. And now they are publicly humiliating Stepho as well. And some on here actually accept that as being deserved

This was an absolutely silly thing for Jaidyn to do. Kudos for self reporting though.

He has received his punishment and now he and the club have to live with that and deal with it.

I am sure he is feeling pretty low right now. I just hope he has the mental wellbeing, support (which I am sure he will receive) and capacity to handle the fallout and comments that he will no doubt be hearing, reading about or face to face.

Something like this could have a serious impact on a persons state of mind.

Hopefully he comes back stronger and better than before.

I have faith that the team will find a way to continue our fight to play finals and look forward to hopefully seeing Stevo back too help us push for a flag.

This will be the time for someone to step up and take his place.

It'd be nice if we didn't have so many examples of stupidity at our club to compare and contrast.

I just hope the club lets this one rest and doesn’t make any further formal statements or let Jaidyn be interviewed on footy shows or websites. Just shut up shop from here on need, and focus on playing football.

With all the talk about boycotts, there must be something the fans can do to force the AFL's hand on the gambling crisis. It's just disgraceful. They even changed the nature of the whole competition to protect their gambling interests (putting in the extra week off at the end of H&A, which made it much easier for 5-8 and led to WB's flag).

Yes, but the question remains how likely it would have been for him to be caught. They said that was a "hypothetical" question.

Even before this, he was overloaded with media stuff. (e.g. three times on The Footy Show, before it died, one of those with S. Murray.) The club should have restricted it.

Surely everyone on here doesn’t believe he could have gotten away with it and not said anything. The AFL had his phone’s IP address and the device he used to place the bet was on Stevo’s phone.

They knew what he’d done and offered Stevo the chance to self confess. As Nick Dal Santo said today, there is more too it than the AFL is letting us know.

Agree with all those who say we should now batten down the hatches. We should keep Stepho away from the media, and we should also refuse to make any comment ourselves. I don't want to see Eddy or Bucks or anyone else going on the media and saying: "He understands he made a stupid mistake, and accepts that he deserves the penalty..." blah, blah, blah.... because that is hypocritical BS. He does NOT deserve a penalty like this, and the AFL are criminals for creating a situation like this to boost their profits at the expense of the mental wellbeing of the very athletes they gouge their profits from.No statement from Collingwood FC whatsoever. Absolute silence. That is what I hope we do.

couldn't agree more. very disappointing from Stevo, he was horrible against Freo so wonder if that's when it started to come out. then he was magnificent against Melbourne. hold that thought and look forward to getting him back for September. dumb mistake from a kid who now needs support. he'll learn, tough to have to do it so publically.

Those who do not learn from History are doomed to repeat it.

If it was a once off I can somewhat understand, he bet multiple times!
Even though so many players have been found guilty before him & the sad thing is someone who is as dumb as dog shit as sure as hell will be found guilty again!

How many times has it been drummed into their thick heads?
If you wanna play AFL do not:

a) Take illegal substances
b) Gamble on the footy
c) Insert any other stupid act which brings the Club into disrepute

Every fk'ing time our season is looking good, some fk'er goes ahead & jeopardises it.

Just OVER it!
