I have kept my powder dry on this one but the verdict is out and it is what it is. However, having been involved with the TAC U18s for a number of years, I can’t stress enough that AFL players are educated on their gambling responsibilities to within an inch of their life.
The compulsory presentations that start at TAC level include gambling, alcohol and drug use. At AFL level, these topics are revisited and expanded to include social media and entrapment.
How any player could even consider participating in a tipping competition while being on an AFL list, is beyond stupidity.
The only person I feel sorry for in this whole sorry saga, is Buckley.
He simply deserves better than the stuff he has been served up in recent years.

Tell that to that kid who got a busted jaw, and spat teeth out after thug Gaff smashed him, 8 wks, tell that to John Greening, nearly bloody died, I was there back then, nearly killed by thug Odea, Greening was never mentally right again, career ruined, life nearly ended, Odea got 10 weeks same as Steveo. Bloody disgrace, its an AFL stich up to take heat off that dickhead McLaughan and his total cockup of the security fiasco with the fans, a total stitchup. 100%, Stevo should have got 5 weeks plus heavy fine, but this penalty is just insane, madness, an meanwhile the League promotes gambling heavily, and makes millions out of it, blatant hypocrisy.

No one is condoning what happened to Brayshaw or Greening. The fact that O'Dea got 10 weeks is remarkable considering how commonplace acts of thuggery were back in the day. In this day and age, he would be rubbed out for nearly the season. However, despite all of this, the perpetrators involved weren't trying to match fix or weren't engaging in an activity that could lead to match fixing and undermining the integrity of the sport.

The reason why Stephenson has received such a punishment today was because he was engaging in an act that could have compromised the integrity of the game and the sport and potentially led to match fixing. That's why I regard this and the administering of performance enhancing substances to be the most serious offences that an AFL player can commit. That's why Essendon players and JT and Keeffe were under such heavy scrutiny a few years back and why Stephenson is receiving similar backlash today.

He didn't make one silly mistake, he did it on three separate occasions and to make matters worse he was betting on outcomes involving Collingwood rather than on other football matches unrelated to Collingwood. The only saving grace for him was he didn't bet on us losing the game and he came forward and "self-reported" to the club which in turn "self-reported" to the AFL. If he didn't self-report and the AFL became aware of his activities, he would be serving a 22 match suspension with no reductions in sight right now.

I'm even more shocked that he casually tells a teammate (Jeremy Howe) after the St Kilda match in the change rooms they he lost on a multi because a teammate altered the outcome of the result. If he didn't disclose this information to Howe, how much longer would he have continued to engage in betting on footy games?

Firstly, to the (thankfully) lone and isolated poster referring to Stevo as a cheat, that’s so far over the top it’s not worth commenting on further..

Before I knew the details, I was hoping for 8 weeks. Sounded fair and would allow 2 games back before finals. The 10 + 12 + 20k feels excessive, out of line with previous incidents, and does hint at the AFL seeking to take the focus of other issues, but once it was three games bet on I’m not surprised.

I would also believe the AFL wanted to go harder. It’s my understanding that the club and the AFL reach an agreement on the penalty and if no agreement then the AFL hands down what it wants. My guess is they wanted more, and Collingwood said enough is enough. This is the maximum we’ll accept else we’ll drag your sorry asses through the courts and create a shitstorm for you and your betting agency partners that you have not seen before.

Let’s be clear though. None of his behaviour was targeted at financial profits. Not at a combined total of $36 in bets. Much more likely sitting around with other 20-y-o mates thinking ‘this will be a laugh’. Not seeing the consequences or the bigger picture.

Very very naive and dumb, but not a hanging offence. He didn’t bash anyone or rob somewhere or drive drunk putting lives at risk.

What’s important now is the next steps. He’s made the right noises, and I’m in no doubt his teammates and his club will be all around him. I am confident he will get the best possible support.

As for how it affects the team? We can cover his absence during H&A. Time to see what J. Daicos can do. Hopefully Billy comes back and stays back as well. Stevo will be back, fit as can be, lacking match fitness for sure, but he’s not a ‘touch’ player as such so that part should be ok.

Whenever Collingwood loses a game, I play Ennio Morricone’s theme song from Once Upon A Time In The West. An intensely sad song, that builds to a crescendo of hope. I played that this afternoon.

The future is bright, including this year. Time for young Daicos to stand up, the club as a whole to get around the kid (absolutely no doubt there), onwards and upwards.

I get all that, yes, but it still reeks of utter bloody hypocrisy that the League gorges itself on gambling revenue and even on its site today, under the Stevo story, had a full blown advert condoning gambling, and promoting it to people, mainly young folks. I also believe the penalty was extremely over the top, surely, a five match ban and heavy fine would have sufficed, and to not allow him to play VFL games, for match fitness, is just utter bloody mindless savagery, on the kid.

So how does the 12 game suspension work? Does it going apply if he is caught gambling or bringing the game into disrepute, or is it for any wrong doing??

I would give the game away if he copped 13 weeks (1 week + 12 suspended) for doing a legal bump that accidentally injures an opponent.

Why would it go underground? Gambling is still legal for the public whether or not it's advertised, just like smoking. Smoking hasn't gone underground, has it?
