You're too generous to your tooth fairy - I leave my teeth instead.

I get your point, but in comparing it to the Stephenson case (I know they're different sports, but the common factor is neither are allowed to bet), there was one party who was hard done by, and another who got off relatively lightly in comparison...

The fact Hawthorn/Clarko showed no remorse and played the victim card with Stratton tells me he should have got a big friggin whack a lot longer than 1-2 weeks. It's dirty play, as dirty as dropping the knee (Sam cough Mitchell) when sliding into a player on the ground. The Hawks have always been dirty.

Im sure I read few yrs back, in a Collingwood history Book, I have, that there was a stench of gambling, by Carlton players, before the 1910 Grand Final, in which we beat the Blues, in a very spiteful game, im sure gambling, miatch fixing played a part in it. :o

Yep, a couple of players got suspended for five years over that. I know it was technically the VFL, not the AFL, but I was bewildered to read reports that Stephenson received the longest betting penalty in the history of the game.

J. Niall:

Stephenson's $36 bets can lead the AFL to give up millions

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/ste ... 520az.html

"The greatest impact of those foolish flutters might not be on Stephenson's season or Collingwood's premiership campaign. More consequential is the conversation that has been created about the AFL's relationship with gambling companies.

It is not an exaggeration to say that bets that totalled $36 could be the catalyst for costing the AFL millions. Or, rather, for the AFL denying themselves millions.

But this will only happen if Gillon McLachlan and the AFL commission seize the moment that Stephenson, in his feckless stupidity, has handed them and the anti-gambling lobby.
...

Conversely, one can mount a reasonable argument that a player's decision to bet in contravention of the rules is not connected to the AFL's $10 million deal with BetEasy, that Stephenson is the author of his own debacle.

Unfortunately for McLachlan and company, this is not how a significant segment of the public sees it, and it's certainly not the view of the anti-gambling lobby led by the no less ubiquitous Reverend Tim Costello, who said on ABC radio on Saturday that he intended to speak to the AFL chairman, Richard Goyder, about ridding the game of what Costello sees as a betting scourge.

Costello notes that the English Premier League cut ties with global betting octopus Ladbrokes, costing themselves squillions. He wants the AFL to follow suit, thus giving up the $10m that BetEasy pays the league in return for promotion at the 'G and Marvel Stadium and exclusive rights to the advertising on the AFL website.
...

Today, with the betting contract up for grabs, McLachlan has an opportunity to make a stand about sports betting. ...

Certainly, it would make a statement stronger than the 10-week suspension of a young, foolish footballer."

Yep, what concerns me, is if we lose very close games, say to eagles and Adelaide, which are very tough on the road, but if we lose each by under one goal, or any other game, we are gonna think,...……………………...IF ONLY STEVO HAD PLAYED, IF IF IF IF IF IF. I dunno,. sigh. :o

These were exactly my thoughts when I saw Stevo in the rooms as the players readied themselves for the game. I'm sure he is counting them down, as are we!!

Stephenson's torp against Saints cost him a leg of one of his multi-bets

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/ste ... 5220s.html

"The Age can reveal that one of the bets Stephenson placed in round nine included the Pies to win, but for the margin not to exceed 39 points.

This key bit of information went a long way to the AFL's integrity unit clearing Stephenson of match-fixing.
...

It can also be revealed that Stephenson had already achieved one of the legs in his multi-bet against the Saints, which was on himself to kick a goal.
...

The Age understands that integrity officers deemed the kick the crucial piece of information that cleared the Magpies youngster of anything more sinister than illegal gambling, though the AFL has said that none of Stephenson's three multi-bets were successful."
