Bloomberg seems to have laboured under this delusion for years that, because he's a "centrist" (read: non-Bible-thumping centre-right oligarch) and has represented both parties, he's a perfect presidential candidate to unite the country. I think he's right on one front: he can bring Americans of all political backgrounds together to eagerly wish for his swift demise.

Meanwhile, if he can take a few points off Biden and fail to get anywhere himself in the process, that's a win-win in my books. Godspeed, Mike.

With regard to the wider race, I think it's down to Biden, Sanders or Warren for the Democratic nomination.

If Trump can't get uproarious applause at a College Footy game in Tuscaloosa, he's either dead or or there's a Confederate Government and he's suddenly become the "leftist" Union enemy.

Mind you, Alabama had an unexpected loss (which I watched, by the way - quite an enjoyable spectacle for a College footy game), so perhaps not everyone was quite so motivated by his presence.

Here's a question I was just wondering about: could Trump have won in 2016 as a third-party candidate (by triangulating the contest between him, Clinton and whomever the Republicans went with)? Common wisdom and precedent would suggest no, but then common wisdom never gave him a chance in the first place.

The base that turned out to him were certainly outside the Republican establishment to an extent, and probably could have been mobilised at least in part regardless. And it's entirely possible that he could have still mounted a strong challenge to, say, Jeb Bush after the primaries. I guess the biggest problem is that he wouldn't have had the debates (and ensuing battles with Republican rivals) to feed off, and thus probably would have received much less media oxygen. Still, interesting to think about.

It would've just handed the Presidency to Hitlery. Moderate Republicans and RINOs would've voted for the milquetoast Jeb or Rubio and the rest for Trump. Think Ross Perot and Bob Dole.
