Yep. It sure was Joffa's idea.

So, Scott. Where did you hear this? Has it been announced officially or is it still at the rumour stage?

This is what the Hearald Sun said today:

Coach medal immortalises great Pie
By MIKE SHEHAN

THE AFL will immortalise Jock McHale's name by striking a premiership coach's medal in his honour.

Just as the player voted best afield in a Grand Final wins the Norm Smith Medal, the coach of the winning team will win the Jock McHale Medal, starting this year.

While details are still to be finalised, the medal will be introduced as a result of an internal review of the system acknowledging the game's major contributors.

The late James Francis "Jock" McHale is a Collingwood legend, and coached the club to eight premierships during his extraordinary term of 1912-49. He was playing coach or coach for 714 matches, including 59 finals and 17 Grand Finals.

The medal is a fitting honour to a man who made a staggering contribution to one club and, by extension, the game.
McHale, remember, also played 261 games for the Magpies.

The AFL is anxious to upgrade the medal system, and the medals themselves.

The Brownlow this year will be made of 18ct gold, previously 9ct, and will cost about $2000.

An AFL official said the league was stung by the look and worth of medals given to players of the competing teams in the Grand Final, and winners of the Norm Smith and John Coleman medals.
One confided recently that Lou Richards, who presented the Norm Smith Medal to James Hird last year, was shocked when he was handed the medal.

"Lou said, 'This looks like something that came out of a Weeties packet'," the official said.
Another official, who declined to be quoted, said: "We've had a discussion about all our medals, and just how pathetic they are."

The AFL's impending acknowledgment of McHale lends weight to the push by people, including this writer, for changes to the criteria for "Legend" status in the Hall of Fame. As it stands, only players can win "Legend" status, precluding McHale, the late Norm Smith, who won six premierships as a coach, and any others who have made or will make similar contributions as players and then coaches.

Smith played 227 games and coached in 452 games.
David Parkin's combined total is 729 games (four premierships as a coach), while Kevin Sheedy's progressive total is 746 and, he, too, has won four premierships as a coach. There's movement at the station.

Now they should honor St. Kilda by giving out The Graeme Jellie Medal to the Wooden Spoon Coach!

Well done Joffa! Eddie should say something on the Footy Show about it being Joffa's idea.
