Not disagreeing with anything you say PnC. Of course the league loves betting, it's the consequences of players betting on games, especially those they are participating in. Nothing good came come from it and it opens the game to match fixing. What starts as a $10 multi might turn into a Hansie Cronje / Chicago BlackSox scandal.Piesnchess wrote:What'sinaname wrote:Mate, Stepho was lucky to get what he got. Stevo has not been same since, knocked the tar outa him, but he will get over it, next season, he will be back to his best, im sure of it.
Anyone caught betting, especially on games they are participating in should be given a life suspension.
Mate, open thy eyes, the bloody League love betting, thrive on it, smell the coffee, like , who gets first kick, goal, point, cash in at half time etc, the game is swamped with betting, the League adores it, does sweet bugger all to scale it back, for kids, it promotes it for kids, actually. Stevo made a mistake, a big one, albeit cost him a lot of money, and games, but to give him ten weeks, whereas a thug removes four teeth from a young raw kid, with his elbow, and gets 8, two less, is a travesty of justice, money over a young kids health, facial features, get bloody real. !

The irony of gambling within the AFL, is that the very organisation who hands down any gambling penalty, whether harsh or soft, is the very same organisation with a gambling institution as one of its major sponsorship partners.
The AFL are quick to pass comment and “ offer advice “ on social issues but remain happy to promote gambling ad nauseum.
That in itself, should be the real crime.
Stephenson doesn’t deserve any sympathy on this one.
Gambling isn’t a crime but all AFL players / employees are drilled to within an inch of their lives about gambling on the AFL.
You don’t get rewarded in life for being stupid.

To use your own logic, the AFL are bloody stupid themselves. They happily promote betting and gambling agencies for sponsorship but then ban this veryPies2016 wrote:^^^

True Lazza, but the AFL have to find revenue sources. Players wage demands mean the AFL needs money to pay the players and grow the competition. Gambling is lucrative. The VFL used to be sponsored by Winfield and other tobacco companies too when they knew the dangers and risks of tobacco. It's not new, nor is it just the current AFL administration.
But as a player, you just can't expose yourself to the possibility of match fixing.

The AFL ban players who bet to PROTECT the gambling revenue.
If there's a sniff that insiders like players are gambling, there's the risk that the general public will see it as tainted and turn away from betting in the sport.
Taking action is not contradictory - its entirely logical.
(However I'd be happy if there was no betting on human-powered sport at all, or at least have it restricted to events that a small group or a single person can't influence).

You are right but again using your example, the AFL/VFL withdrew from sponsorship by tobacco companies. Why can’t they withdraw from Gambling companies? Surely in normal times, there would be many options out there?

Matthew Boyd gave an interview (yesterday, I think) that indicated they were looking for more from Stevenson in training - and expects him to be back very soon. It sounds to me the same as how Cox fell out of favour - maybe they just aren't impressing enough on the training track. But Stevo's a proven talent, it is to our detriment when he's out (regardless of his work ethic in training)
I find your lack of faith disturbing

I think you're right, and in 20 years time, we'll probably look back and think how crazy it was to have gambling sponsorship at AFL games.Lazza wrote:You are right but again using your example, the AFL/VFL withdrew from sponsorship by tobacco companies. What Stevo did was the equivalent of insider trading and as far as I'm concerned, he's lucky that he's even still playing. I lost a lot of respect for him after that and have zero sympathy for him. AFL players betting on the outcome of games is disgraceful and not on irrespective of whether or not the AFL are funded and sponsored by the gambling industry; the players should know better. That aside, his form hasn't been great. Glandular fever may not have helped his cause but he hasn't been playing well at all. I suspect he's been one of those players who's cruised through junior comps on talent alone and therefore not had to put in much effort. Now he's been forced to play a new role and get his hands dirty and it's pretty clear from his body language that he doesn't like it. You can't expect to sit in the fwd line and play half a quarter and get away with it especially when your team mates are busting their arse around the ground to make you look good. He needs to step up and get serious about his football.

I think the problem is young peoples approach to gambling, which is far looser than when I was coming up....I have a young mater, professional type, gambles all the time via his phone, on anything and everything, he reckons all his mates do it.
These guys barely drink, never take drugs, but gamble like its going out of style.
That being said, gambling was pretty much illegal outside of the horses when I was young

Mate, maybe, maybe not, but lets be honest, young Stevo has paid a very severe penalty, and is still paying the price , for his mistake, i think its time we all cut him a break, hes paid the price, learnt a hard lesson.

It reeks of gross hypocrisy, from the League, quite happy for young kids to wet their appetite same day mulities and all that crap, odds, cash out, etc, but feign shock and horror if a player does it . What Stevo did was wrong, i admit it, and hes paid the price for his folly, but that does not alter the fact, the League, reeks of hypocrisy on this whole gambling issue.
