Sidey could play for quite a few more years at a high level... in the right position... forward.

Put him crumbing at coxs feet ffs.

Totally agree!! Unfortunately Sidey can cover so much ground he’s used on the ball to fill in holes. We need the younger players to step up (especially Sier in the midfield). I’d much rather Sidey crumbing forward than JT. With cap rotations, rest him in the forward line

In 2010 the younger crew was

- Steele
- Beams
- Wellingham

They made a significant difference to the team imo

How nice would it be to have 3 young players of that quality now, back then Wellingham was so good

If I recall Ben Reid may have been 20 back then too.

And Pendlebury was the same age as Sier

Steele Beams Wellingham Reid Pendlebury

Should be

Macrae McInnes McCreedy Kelly Sier

Then there was the Legend of the Blair Witch ( who in 2011 had a Petracca like season ) according to stats

376 disposals ( 190 contested )
26 goals 18
94 tackles ( Petracca hasnt achieved yet )
72 inside 50's
50 clearences

I guess you meant to write "he was not central".

But he was unlucky not to win the second Norm Smith medal. (And the fellow who did win it had a putrid first GF.)

Blair was incredible that year, we too often forget how good he was. Unfair to judge him in his final years when the game had gone past him and favoured more athletic types. Imagine Blair if he’d played in the 90s!

Macrae McInnes McCreedy Kelly Sier

It’s coming! If Sier can lift his mental game.

You can not be at all serious ???
2009 our best player by the length of the flemington straight was Swan from Dale Thomas
2010 was Pendles closely followed by Swan Thomas Ball
2018 was Adams followed by Pendles and JDG
Any chance Sidey had to to get the prize was lost in the GF when he was embarrassed by Hutchings. His inability to offer any usefulness towards the teams goal of winning the GF erased any credits he had before that game were lost completely that day
Thinking or stating any different is just a plain out fabrication of the facts

Just for clarification on exactly where he stands in AFL rankings prior to the bounce of the ball in season 2021

https://www.statsinsider.com.au/afl/player-ratings

He was ranked 7th(in the Collingwood team) and 91st players in the AFL prior to first game

He’s now ranked 9th (in Collingwood team) and has now dropped out of top 100 players in the AFL
The rankings points system is the most reliable in its fairness awarding points according to a players on the day performance v same performance same opposition previously

Since game 1 2019 season Sidey has slid from #43rd ranked player in the AFL to now be ranked #102nd

2009 - the "right in front of me" final:

https://finalsiren.com/MatchDetails.asp ... rks%20Desc

2010 - just watch the two Grand Finals.

2018 -
The winner of the 2018 AFL Coaches Association Gary Ayres Award for best player in the AFL Finals series is Steele Sidebottom of the Collingwood Football Club.

Sidebottom’s scintillating form throughout the AFL Finals Series helped carry his side into their first Grand Final since 2011. A run of huge matches, which peaked in a 41 disposal and 13 mark preliminary final master class against Richmond, saw Sidebottom finish September on 23 votes from the coaches, five ahead of teammate Taylor Adams (18 votes), and six head of West Coast Eagles midfielder Jack Redden (17 votes).

So you rate Sidey better than Swan in 2009 ???
Please do yourself a favour and don’t say that again it’s embarrassing

2010 2 GF’s he was fair but miles behind Pendles in the others finals he was adequate. He wasn’t a match winner he was barely a bit player really but he was inexperienced then so he gets cut some slack (don’t think he had 50 games up by then) his influence was minimal really in comparison to Pendles swan ball daisy brown Cloke Heater

2018 he had a great game against the tigers
But when it mattered the most he was absolutely putrid
On the biggest stage as a experienced player he was so poor it was beyond description really
Ask yourself the question (you know the one you use to judge other players previously) how do they perform on the biggest stage when it matters then get back to me about 2018
IMO for influence in 2018 getting the team to the GF and including there performance in the GF I would have Grundy Pendles Adams JDG ahead of him easily.
Other than the game when the tigers decided to let him run free without a opponent all day he was fair in a game and putrid in the another

But that’s all ancient history I guess the question really should be where is he at now
Exposed form (2019/20/21) he’s gone backwards rapidly in many aspects and he’s lost loads of respect he had among supporters

Your a lover of stats and ratings right now they tell you exactly where he’s at he’s ranked 102nd best player in the AFL
That basically means every team has 6 players who are better than him including ours (on ratings we actually have 8 players ahead of him)
He’s in the twilight of his career. Whether 2021 or 2022 is his last year we will see but if his performances continue on the trajectory he’s currently on it will be sooner than later guaranteed

Qldmagpie67 you tend to make sense most of the time but I think you’re way off this time. Sidey is the glue which linked all those parts you mentioned together. It’s like saying one part of a classic Porsche 911 is the reason that makes it a classic - it takes all the parts combined to make it great....the transmission, engine, drivetrain, suspension, body styling are only as good the next part that connects it. Opposition coaches have obviously identified this and by quelling Sideys influence know it affects the efficacy of the other parts. In those games where Sidey was quelled it should be asked what did the rest of the team do help out - nothing. Selfish football rarely results in good outcomes.

Sidey’s value and effectiveness regarding overall team performance is sublime and goes beyond mere stats and rankings.

If you don’t believe me check it out for yourself - the evidence doesn’t lie
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men...

I see Sidebottom as a list clogger. The same way Clarkson sees past players who have given their all, (mind you with exceptional compensation for it) like a hodge or a lewis. But not Collingwood, we’ll keep him on the list to see out his career so not to upset anyone.

IMO Sidebottom's talent has clearly been wasted in the midfield when he should have been a fwd pocket his whole career, thankfully its not too late to rectify that.
