WA in lockdown, how long before Vic joins them?

But seriously, the mutant strain in India is going nuts, infection and death rates are crazy and that's even considering they're likely to be massively under reported.

Stop flights in from India or send them all to Darwin.

I read somewhere the other day about a flight that left India bound for Hong Kong, everyone was supposedly negative when they left but 40 something people got infected on that flight.

Although in fairness to Ana and Mark, they e got a long way to go to catch Dan for most cases caused by their exporting of the virus

Still got at least two months of freedom apparently before we have to worry about lockdowns again, but these Labor premiers love a snap lockdown over weekends.

I'm not bothered, I'll go and get it when I can.

Now they've opened a bulk vaccination joint at Heidelberg Repat I might wander in. I checked the criteria online, apparently I qualify under the medical bit as I have two different blood pressure medications.

The blood clot thing doesn't fuss me, mum's doing OK after her shot. Mild side effects, really sore arm yesterday, feeling average today, but nothing that you can't push through

I do wonder about the supposed negative tests from some countries.

2 of my nephews and their partners and a 3 month old baby plus Mums brother and his wife flew from Perth to Qld to go to Dads funeral. Not sure how long they will have to stay.

It pisses me off. 2 are over 70 and one runs a child minding centre but none have had a vaccine. Pull your damn finger out. Mum is 84 and hasn;t had it yet.

For anyone interested, Worldometer has added a "weekly trends" page, here: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavir ... ekly_table

A lot of the reportage at the moment is focusing on Brazil and India, because of the sheer numbers of new cases and deaths but also because of concern about the emergence of further new, potentially more dangerous variants. It is certainly true that such vast "reservoirs" of disease need better attention from the rest of the planet, collectively. It's getting to the point where, irrespective of border controls, it is difficult to see even well-administered countries like Australia and NZ continuing to avoid devastating outbreaks, absent better management of the terrible outbreaks in other countries. The worldwide 7-day rolling average of new cases per day is now well over 800,000.

Despite that, the raw numbers suggest that some parts of Europe are now the worst affected in the World, proportionally. Leaving aside a couple of small, statistical outliers (Gibraltar and San Marino, for instance), there are now 9 countries with total death rates over 2,000 per million of population, namely Hungary, Czechia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Slovakia, Belgium and Slovenia. On present numbers, Italy, Brazil, Peru, the US and Poland will join them soon. That next bunch of countries doesn't include a couple like the UK and Portugal because it looks like their vaccination efforts are genuinely slowing the spread of the disease.

A brief update on Sweden shows that it is presently experiencing around 5,500 new cases per day. It's death rate peaked at about 100 per day at the end of 2020 but its now generally down to single figures (although 32 deaths have been reported there, so far, today). The "let's just get on with it" strategy there, even assuming it could be replicated at the same modest levels in Australia, with our generally more concentrated population centres, would - proportionally adjusted for population size - have produced around 2,500,000 cases and 35,000 deaths here.

Australia's actual numbers are presently around 30,000 cases and 910 deaths. The death rate in Australia - 35 per million people - is now down to the 153rd-highest in the World (this is as good a measure as any of what is happening in the rest of the World - Australia was sitting around 100 last time I looked) and way below the World average (which is about to tick over 400 per million).

In Victoria, there were no new locally-acquired cases reported. There were 2 new cases, one acquired overseas and 1 acquired interstate. There are 23 active cases. 13,079 test results were reported.

Ultimately, both cases are sourced overseas (the "acquired interstate" is, as I understand it, traced to a person who returned from Shanghai). I think Australia needs to start arranging for people to be vaccinated in situ (and wait out immunity periods) before they come back to Australia. We know that hotel quarantine is actually a form of Russian Roulette.

So I wandered down to the Heidelberg Repat this morning, could've fired a cannon through the bulk vaccination area. massively under utilised.

People were really good. As I was a walk in, they just gave me an appointment. 3 minutes after walking in the door I was in a cubicle going through the preamble to the vaccine. Done, dusted, didn't feel a thing.

Sit down in a post vac area for 15 minutes, during which a bloke comes round with a surface tablet and books me in for the second shot in 12 weeks. When I'm leaving they give me a little sticker to wear on my chest so if I collapse and face plant while out today, authorities know to burn the body.

If you qualify and haven't got it done yet, get your arse down to a bulk joint before they get busy. I feel very happy and secure now in the knowledge that Bill Gates now knows where I am 24/7.

That A grade Australia got for its domestic mitigation efforts is losing its gloss with the vaccination rates. Who got the international deals and supply risk management so wrong?
