According to the ABC, there is a 3rd tier 1 site - Epping Woolworths on the corner of Cooper St and High St, from 5.40pm-6.38pm on May 8.

That's actually Epping Plaza shopping centre, right next door to the Northern Hospital. That India Gate groceries joint is on the other side of High Street.

It appears that the working hypothesis is that this fellow caught the virus in HQ in SA (the person in the next room tested positive on 4 May). Whatever else comes from this incident, it suggests - yet again - that hotel quarantine doesn't work. It's predicated on the notion that 14 days will do it - which is only remotely plausible if we are certain that infection can't be transmitted in HQ. That's plainly a nonsense. This seems to happen every couple of weeks somewhere in the country and it is only good luck that things haven't (yet) gone seriously awry again.

Actually, when you look at the numbers that have come through Hotel Quarantine and the number of infections per state, it's clear that it does work in the vast majority of cases. Over 7500 infections in HQ with only a small number of escapes resulting in community infections. Victoria being the notable exception.

You mitigate the risk by having in place a uniform statewide electronic check in system like the QR codes to facilitate contact tracing.

The SA government is investigating, the likelihood is indeed that this person got infected in HQ. We'll see if they find an answer.

We don't yet know how the guy caught it in HQ. At least SA haven't pulled a Nebuliser out of their Victorian issue Felix the Cat excuse bag. It's been clear for a while now that airborne transmission is a reality so apart from modifying airconditioning they need to be adhering to some strict infection control principles.

Of more concern should be the poor take up of the Vic state QR code system. They don't know who many of the potentially infected at the Curry restaurant are, because they didn't check in.

Both NSW and QLD had working QR code check in systems while Vic was still in hard lockdown, so there's no excuses why Victoria didn't have one ready to launch and mandated to use well before Christmas last year. Instead they're still faffing around with trying to get people to use it.

The lesson to be learnt from Hotel Quarantine is that there shouldn't be any. They may as well have public officials offering free COVID samples in supermarkets for all the good it is.

Health Minister Martin Foley said the case highlighted the need to move to other forms of quarantine.

"Hotels weren't designed to be quarantine facilities," he said.

"The alternative arrangements to hotel quarantine need to be taken up and need to be fast-tracked."

Of course the states excuse that the Feds should be running it have proven to be no safeguard with these recent cases, all they care about is being able to turnaround and blame the Feds every time this happens.

Which also shows that having quarantine facilities in remote locations won't keep the virus out of the cities either. Also just blaming hotels may not be the fault here given he was also on the same plane as the person he's supposed to have caught it from.

But all the armchair experts had that as the only option that would be a definite success...

Clearly the only way to deal with Covid is as NSW does, accept you will have cases and be prepared to respond appropriately.
