think positive wrote:my first shattered was John Wayne, then Elvis, Whitney, Princess Di, Prince Philip, Peter Brock, Ayrton Senna, Steve Irwin, Dale Buggins - I met him once, Kenny Rogers, John Denver, I can tell you where I was & how I found out, princess Di was really heart breaking.
Steve Irwin hurt a bit, my cousin worked very closely with him.

I can even remember exactly where I was when I heard about Princess Di and I was only a young lad.

I know some people that weren’t unhappy when Brock died. He did some horrible things.

Phil Walsh’s death shocked me, as did Millane’s.

I was at Steve Irwin’s zoo with my kids the day before his funeral.

I remember that because we played North at the MCG and just before the first bounce they announced she had died.

Millanes death happened near work and I had to look out the window , see the Police and media scrum, then later that day go to the Copeland where it was a cacophony of clapping and tears whenever he was named or got votes. It ruined the night for Tony Francis who won it.

Okay, picking up the international tax story again. This really is major policy news, regardless of debates about the rate itself. Is it a case of too little, or a good step towards resetting basic expectations? I haven't read the detail, but my first instinct is that any movement from the US in this regard is good for everyone, because national revenues are in trouble everywhere, and that's causing destabilisation and decay.
The NYTimes wrote:The Biden administration proposed a global tax on multinational corporations of at least 15 percent in the latest round of international tax negotiations, Treasury Department officials said on Thursday, as the U.S. looks to reach a deal with countries that fear hiking their rates will deter investment.

The rate was a lower-than-expected proposal from the United States, and the Treasury Department hailed its positive reception among other countries as a breakthrough in the negotiations. The fate of the talks is closely tied to the Biden administration’s plans for overhauling the corporate tax code in the United States, and the White House is pushing to reach an international agreement this summer and pass legislation later this year.

President Biden has proposed raising the corporate tax rate in the United States to 28 percent from 21 percent, which would be higher than the rate in many other countries. A deal over a global minimum tax would better allow the United States to make the increase without putting American companies at a disadvantage or encouraging them to move operations offshore.

Treasury has been holding meetings this week with a panel of negotiators from 24 countries about the so-called global minimum tax, which would apply to multinational companies regardless of where they locate their headquarters.

I guess the point is he was already a hero for many as a player. One terrible, reckless decision that he paid the ultimate penalty for doesn’t necessarily undermine that.

Before the inflation fundamentalists come for you, bear this in mind:

It's not that it can't ever happen, it's just that you need actual, reasoned arguments justifying why.
