Victoria has recorded four new locally acquired COVID-19 cases, taking the state's outbreak to 65.

The results were detected among 49,439 tests received on Thursday, and there were 24,169 vaccine doses administered at state-run sites.

The four new cases are all linked to exisiting cases.

Three of the new cases are connected to a family in West Melbourne, while one is a close contact of a confirmed case.

Yesterday, two cases of coronavirus previously linked to Melbourne's growing outbreak were reclassified as false positives.

Interestingly, it appears that the family that went to Jervis Bay has a quite different variant of COVID from everyone else in Victoria. There's uncertainty about whether they caught it here and took it there - or caught it there and brought it here.

The bombshell piece of information out of this press conference has been the revelation by Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton that another COVID-19 outbreak has been identified in Melbourne.

Genomic testing of members of a family of four who returned from Jervis Bay in NSW has revealed they have the Delta variant of the virus. That is a different variant to the other cases which have been linked back to the outbreak from South Australia, which are the Kappa variant.

Professor Sutton said it was not yet clear where the virus had come from, and they have yet been unable to link the virus back to cases in hotel quarantine in Victoria or anywhere else in Australia.

He said it was not out of the question that they acquired the virus while in NSW, or earlier in Victoria.

“Where it’s come from needs further investigation,” said Professor Sutton.

2 of the 4 members of the family have the Delta variant. That is the bad one, not the one the other cases have had. So WTF did it come from? And how do 4 people in a family unit have 2 different strains of the virus

Sutton etc playing cute insinuating they may have caught it in NSW. One of the adults in the family tested positive first, then the others days later so it's pretty clear what happened here.

Since this family was up in NSW 2 weeks ago you'd think that if they infected others (or the person who infected them infected others) something would have shown up in tests by now, but no.

Maybe I'm being too cynical, but I smell a rat.

Funny...let's see how this highly infectious delta strain causes a year long lockdown in Victoria, but nothing happens in NSW.

^ Stui, why would you impugn Sutton's integrity like that? His isn't a political position.

Plainly, he's raising a reasonable issue. The way I read it (see The Age's article extracted in my previous post), he wasn't pointing the figure at NSW, just raising NSW as a logical possibility. We've done almost 350,000 tests in Victoria in a week and this is apparently the only family we've found with this strain. It's very surprising and needs to be chased down.

I make the comment because I'm cynical and, as I said in a previous post, Sutton may not be a political appointment but has been guilty of some serious hyperbole in very recent days. I think at best his comment was mischievous.

While this strain hasn't been seen in the community in Victoria, it has been seen in Hotel Quarantine apparently. I agree it's concerning, the variant we've been dealing with is relatively benign. IIRC WHO refers to it as a variant of interest but this other variant is a variant of concern.
