Firstly, because of his limitations, he is way to easily exploited by the opposition when they roll over a small forward onto him.
You can also see he’s nervous everytime he is forced to take a kick from deep in the back line. There is absolutely no fluid movement about the way he plays and when you start self doubting and second guessing, it goes down hill very quickly.
Personally, I thought Madgen was an improved footballer earlier in the season ( albeit off a low base ) but his form has dropped away since those early rounds and his weaknesses become highlighted even further.

In truth, he’s doing nothing more than warming a spot until one of higher rated tall kids are ready, so I never quite understand all the abuse he cops.
Not everyone can be a superstar but it’s the unrealistic supporters who like to think everyone should be.
No-one is abusing Madgen. He is playing within his limitations. However instead of thinking about Madgen, how about you stop for a moment and think about Keane. He plays his first game last year against the Freo best forward (Lobb) and then gets dropped. Then he plays his second game this year and gets dropped again. Everybody at the club including Buckley have talked up Keane's chances in the senior team this year, yet he stays out of the senior team, even after the loss of Darcy Moore. No other club in the AFL would have treated Keane like we have. If Keane was competing for a spot in the Richmond backline you'd understand his non-selection, but when you see Keane running around in the VFL while players like Madgen are running around in the senior team you need to ask why?

I don’t really know. It may be just that he hadn’t played for 5 weeks or so, because of the hiatus in the VFL and a couple of poorly-timed byes. It would have been a big ask to bring anyone in to play KPD without any recent competitive game time.

Meanwhile, the two coaches thought only 3 Collingwood players were worth votes - Maynard, Adams and Grundy.

We’re so far ahead of the 2004/05 team in terms of our list compared to 2005 before we recruited Thomas and Pendlebury. Really all we need Is Nick Daicos and a small fast forward (Dib) to build a premiership team. We should be playing to win under Harves. However I don’t think we’re giving ourselves the best chance of winning with the teams we’re selecting.

The Madgen hate is ridiculous- Madgen and Mayne are far from the ideal preference to have the ball- yet both end up with it in most cases due to actually running and helping out. Add Roughy to this list.
Then we get stuck- Madgen and Mayne are too conservative- and slow us down, with time taken to pick out a short and often backwards target.
Roughy isnt great short passing and generally ends up kicking long to contests.
Although Madge does make the odd howler- majority of his mistakes are due to being under serious pressure- mainly due to a team mater playing hot potato and passing off to him.
I am still perplexed as to why we persist with a chip to one if these guys in the bakc pocket from kick outs- which inevitably puts us under more pressure.
Bizarre, given you can run 15 and kick it 60.

Watching on Sat- we are not skilled enough to switch play- kicks dont have speed or depth- so opps can cover off/close down.

Freo would switch with a 50-60 m kick hitting a target hard and fast and then opened us up repeatedly.

Again, there is no hate for Madgen. You can make as many excuses as you like for him. If we want to win games of football in an elite competition which is AFL where the best players in the country compete against each other, we need reliable defenders who are going to have to come up against the best forwards in the game and prevent them kicking goals.

Roughead is a tick. Mayne has returned to form. He was down last year during the hubs. Now he is back to his best and playing in defense where he belongs. He is a tick. Madgen played one decent game on the wing and a couple in defense. How does he earn a tick when you've got younger players running around in the VFL who offer more both in the present and the future than he does?

We still haven't got a proper full forward or CHF. :(

Gee that is a big call given the other lists in the league.

Exactly. Mihocek is best suited as the second or third tall.

It's an indictment on the list managers and coaches that we haven't recruited a key forward for years.

Kelly and McMahon are future stars. That’s before we see what Ash Johnson and Begg can do. Both Tohill and Keane can hold down key defensive posts. That’s our spine taken care of. We need more pace out of the centre of the ground. McInnes offers that. Then we have Nick Dacois arriving next year. He’s loaded with skill. The missing key is a fast nippy small forward. All the top sides have them. No list is perfect but most of the ingredients are there. Just need the new coach to put it all together. I’d be surprised if we’re not pushing towards a final 8 spot next year. By 2024 we should be in premiership mode again.
