Any Australian leader who tried opening up while having those numbers would be shouted out of office, tarred and feathered and drawn and quartered. Interesting the daily deaths graph very much mirrors last summer

Different level of tolerance. When you've gone through hundreds or thousands of daily deaths, 20 doesn't seem so many I guess.
Anyway, up in NSW,
NSW recorded 35 locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm on Friday. There were 56,331 tests processed in the reporting period.
Nine of the cases were infectious while in the community, the rest were already in isolation
Twenty-nine of the new infections were linked to previously confirmed cases and six remain under investigation.
While the numbers are high, they aren't taking off exponentially (touch wood) so they're still hopeful of being able to ease some of the restrictions by Friday.

Very different to a Victorian style lockdown. Less rigid and authoritarian, that's even reflected in the language. There's no talk (that I've heard) about "beasts" or having to run this Virus down, it's all calm and factual. Different style and approach.

Well Australia has 2 people in hospital, zero deaths from local cases in 2021, but half the nation is in lockdown and apparently we’re in a worse position than every other country in the world of you believe Twitter.Dave The Man wrote:Guess the UK is looking at how any are in Hospital/Dying from it instead of how many Caseseddiesmith wrote:Not the only one, just the loud minority who are most upset with everything. Of course people also forget the northern hemisphere entering summer, All of Australia had a pretty normal summer last year and will again this year. For all the doom and gloom, 99% of Australians have been living a fairly normal life for the last 12 months outside Victoria and even here there hasn’t been much difference to normal when we’re not locked down.
Only issue is certain premiers who think one case = lockdown meaning people live normally but in fear of another unnecessary lockdown.
Just be wary of the UK death numbers - deaths from COVID lag weeks behind infections. In eaerly May, the average number of new cases per day was down around 2,000. It has ramped exponentially. So, a fortnight ago, there were under 9,000 cases per day on the rolling average but today they are at a 7-day rolling average above 20,000.
That said, there was an ABC (I think) analysis on the "Delta" variant that stated that the early figures from the UK suggested the death rate was down from roughly 1 in 50 for the original virus to less than 1 in 300 for this variant.

You're suggesting that as the case numbers are back on the upward trajectory, the death rate may soon join it?Pies4shaw wrote:Just be wary of the UK death numbers - deaths from COVID lag weeks behind infections. That would make sense, depending on their vaccine rollout I suppose. If the Vaccine is doing it's job, case number may climb but deaths shouldn't. The Delta variant seems far more contagious, the death rate being lower could be the result of the vaccine, advances in treating the Virus or just that the variant is more contagious but less deadly.

No, I'm not suggesting anything about the trends. I'm just suggesting that we hold off assessment of what's happening in the UK because today's deaths aren't the result of the new infections - they're likely the consequence of what happened a fortnight or more ago. It's just too early to tell. We'll know - but not for a few weeks.stui magpie wrote:You're suggesting that as the case numbers are back on the upward trajectory, the death rate may soon join it?

But what has Johnson and his merry band of dunces encouraging irresponsible behaviour got to do with Australia's third-world vaccination numbers? Did his bumbling stupidity somehow distract Captain Hillsong from planning and negotiating properly?eddiesmith wrote:Not the only one, just the loud minority who are most upset with everything. What I find funny is people complaining that fit and healthy 30 year olds don't have access to a vaccine yet and its all the Feds fault and no one cares that the states haven't even bothered to vaccinate the people working in their Covid wards...
Please god tell me these numbers are not accurate and are somehow a misrepresentation: https://www.9news.com.au/national/coron ... 689c39c467
You're frogs slow boiling in a pot living in utterly pathetic denial. This is a disgraceful failure. Monumental Trump/Brexit-level incompetence. You've elected completely talentless, world-ignorant religious quacks and science haters, and by god they've delivered. They've even managed the near-impossible and made Australia globally disliked, as if tiny powerless countries living in the shadow of China and scrambling for vaccines billions of dollars beyond their scientific investment can afford to be unpopular.
It's an effing embarrassment. Perhaps the Glibs and their backward hangers on felt left out of the unparalleled stupidity of Brexit/Trump and didn't want to show up their superiors.

So last for vaccine rollout but no1 for Covid response, wow, know which way I'd prefer it
Of course the fact those countries had to rush through emergency powers to get vaccinations up and running because they had a Covid problem is obviously not important to you.
Really if we'd rushed through the vaccination process quicker we'd have likely had a lot more dead from blood clots because more people would have been exposed before it was uncovered, but that's apparently acceptable as long as people can travel overseas quicker...

Australia may have to help out Indonesian medical personnel before we can fully vaccinate our own population.

Apparently they were fully vaccinated, but the vaccine they got was next to useless.

So those third-world vaccination numbers are correct?

Perhaps Captain Hillsong thought the Lord would've landed on the roof of the US embassy in Jerusalem and created the new earth by now, so there was no point implementing a proper vaccine risk management strategy.
Instead, lockdown until 2028 will have to suffice. From world example to international embarrassment in about five minutes. Time and again: win the short-term news cycle and fail the long-term challenge. It's like crack cocaine to the Glibs and their Facebook fans. In fact, you can set your watch by it: the Glibs and Cult Clueless claim a great win, and five minutes later massive cost is dumped on the nation as actual reality dawns.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/02/worl ... -zero.htmlFor Australia and every other nation pursuing a so-called “Covid zero” approach, including China and New Zealand, the gathering in western Sydney amounts to a warning: Absent blanket vaccinations, the fortress cannot hold without ever more painful restrictions.
“This is the beginning of the end of Covid zero” said Catherine Bennett, the chair of epidemiology at Deakin University in Melbourne. “We may be able to get it under control this time, but it’s just going to be harder and harder.”
...
What is especially galling for Australians, he added, is that the country should be further along. Australia, after mastering Covid testing, made the mistake of betting too heavily on two vaccine options, the AstraZeneca shot and one proposed by the University of Queensland. The latter failed in early trials; the former has been caught in a debate in Australia over whether the low risk of blood clots should keep it from being used by anyone under 60.
