1. Patrick Lipinski: 190cm. 85kg and midfielder from Bulldogs & 23 years old

2. Hayden McLean: 197cm, 97kg and Forward/Ruck from Swans & 22 years old

3. Dylan Stephens: 184cm, 76kg and midfielder from Swans & 20 years old

Yes we would all like Adam Cerra and Ben King for a third round draft pick, but the above players seem to be that range we can afford whether it's by salary cap, late draft pick, pre-season number 2 pick or delisted/free agency levers. Some of the above would add value for existing gaps on the list and some maybe superfluous to needs, however to think that only "youth" should be targeted for 2022, well get used to regular finishes of 16th-18th on the ladder.

* Lipinski: offer a 3rd round pick or threaten to push him through to the Pre-season draft

* Jack Silvagni: ditto

* Lochie O'Brien: 4th rounder

* Tom Lynch: delisted FREE agent

* Dylan Stephens: 2nd rounder in 2022

In fairness this can happen with players who arent father sons too - but I do sometimes think clubs are compelled (emotionally) to take them before perhaps they really want to.

I'm not so sure on this... when matching a bid, it means at least one other club rates them as being the best available at that selection (not just us) as by bidding, they risk having to take the player if the bid is not matched i.e. they are not bidding in the hope it is matched. With the 20% points discount, that drops the effective pick even lower providing even more value.

I'm sure our draft gurus with their draft boards have potential FS's ranked and when the bid comes, if the reduced cost is greater than where we rank them, we pass (unless it's very close), or if it's not, we match.

A fair bit would also have to do with the draft planning i.e. pick trading with the knowledge we have a highly rated player coming to us.

I think with the handling of some list calls last off season, we've seen there is no compulsion or emotion involved in list decisions.

Mostly Disagree. Remember, Collingwood don’t technically “ select “ their F / S connections on the night. A club who rates those players needs to select them first and then we have the choice of matching their bid with a 20 % discount or not. The point being, at least one other club has rated those players more highly than what Collingwood end up taking them at. In terms of their selection, Kelly, 2 x Browns and Daicos were all selections between 30 odd and 50 odd ( IIRC ) Close to half of all draftees picked between those selections won’t play more than a handful of games in their entire short AFL careers. If you check the detail on where both the Brown brothers and Daicos were picked, we have done fairly well to date against AFL averages for that pick number. Kelly is a work in progress and can’t be fairly critiqued until he at least has a run at it. Moore is different again, he was an early draft pick and his output is a reflection of where he was selected.
And we can’t have it both ways, there won’t be anyone complaining when Nick Daicos makes his way to Collingwood on the back of the F / S rule.

The Maynard issue is a highly speculative rumour.
