The 2021 Great Big Consolidated Trade & Draft thread

MJ23, I think one of the first conversations re the above is how much do they rate the 2022 draft. If they really rate it, you would think they would like to keep a pick at the pointy end. If they aren’t convinced of the quality, they might opt out of the 2022 action and buy back in for 2021. That wouldn’t be difficult to organise with Daicos being called out so early and Dib ( if Pies are interested ) being likely called out after forty odd.
My own thoughts are that by the end of the 2021 draft ( even with only a min of three players selected ) our list will be young enough to not feel the need to heavily invest in the 2022 draft ( subject to perceived quality )
I still think trading in a “ quality “ player for a swap of both clubs future first round picks remains a very possible outcome during this trade period. This would mean that we still keep a first rounder in tact and if we like a particular draftee, we then still have the primary pieces to move up the draft order.
It’s an unusual off season trading scenario. On the one hand we have a lot of options available to us ( free agents, PSD ) but on the other, our hands are considerably tied with the big points required to secure Daicos. This is where you really want smart operators running the footy dept.

With us, this player and our current position - Id say never ever. It would be investigated by AFL integrity in depth.sherrife wrote:Yeah but does it happen is my question...MJ23 wrote:^ ^yep believe it’s called Draft tampering.
Also if people think we're going to get picks in rounds 2 or 3 for Thomas, Cox and Sier, they're dreaming. Maybe Lynch might get us a 3rd rounder. I think Thomas stays because he's decent and worth nothing on the market, Cox goes just to save us money.

Yep that seems right. Regardless, would be quite unprofessional to hang our entire strategy on a dodgy deal that North could pull out of anyway.MJ23 wrote: With us, this player and our current position - Id say never ever. It would be investigated by AFL integrity in depth.
So that makes securing pick 2 pointless unless we can trade it up to pick one, which we realistically have no chance in doing.

Yeah think I agree. I think with Daicos coming plus maybe Dibb along with the kids this year we need to see who can play and who has potential to be A graders. I like the idea of a preserved first rd pick next year as currency for a big player in or quality kid.Pies2016 wrote:^ ^ ^

Agree, think the only way we get another early pick is trading picks on the night. Anything else gets lost on Daicos.sherrife wrote:Yep that seems right. You would need evidence of draft tampering. I would think any club could successfully argue why they chose not to pick Daicos at one but I’m not sure three other clubs could all argue why they didn’t pick Daicos and he ended up falling through to us at #5 or later. You’re simply inviting scrutiny.sherrife wrote:Yeah but does it happen is my question...MJ23 wrote:^ ^yep believe it’s called Draft tampering.

Collingwood may incentivise Kangas to call out Darcy at #1 and Kangas reasoning would be that they picked on a needs basis ( KPF as a priority ) and that they couldn’t know if Dogs would match it or not.

Yeah there is. Collingwood somehow ensured that Luke Ball would be available for them to choose although a few other clubs had earlier draft picks. So this process is possible without it being called tampering.sherrife wrote: A related question, is there a precedent with clubs doing deals to prevent them picking players you want? Eg if we had pick 2 could we get North not to pick Daicos?
Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. Just because it's dark and stormy now doesn't meant that you aren't headed for glorious sunshine!

If you plan for Nick to go at Pick on that leaves a deficit of 700 points (3000 less 20% discount = 2400 points). We have 1700 points currently.sherrife wrote:Yeah but does it happen is my question...MJ23 wrote:^ ^yep believe it’s called Draft tampering.

2 x Round 3 (#45. 347, #46. 331); or
1 x Round 3 (#50. 273) + 2 x Round 4 (#56. 194 and #57. 182)
So.... doable with that list - Lynch, Cox, Sier, Thomas.

That was salary manipulation. He nominated his terms in the draft and heavily front ended his asking price to make him less palatable to prospective suitors. Didn't ensure anything, just made it more likely he'd slide through to our pick.Lazza wrote:Yeah there is. Carlton did the same with Jack Martin when he moved from GCS. His first year was something like $1.5M.

100% Correct - he then re-negotiated his contract half way through adding a year and smoothing out the totaljackcass wrote:That was salary manipulation. This is the article I always reference which says "close to $1 million":MJ23 wrote:$850 over 5yr for Treloar

I guess $850k technically qualifies as close to $1m but I would have expected "close to $900k" in that case
Of course happy if it is true
