The police and the CFMEU
<Split from the Coronavirus 4 - Kingdom of the Crystal Skull thread. BBMods >
Protests and fights breaking out in the city, no cops to break it up. Oh that’s right, it’s just the Union so they can do as they please. I’m guessing the recruits who graduated on Friday can’t shove CFMEU members to the ground as easily as old ladies so they’ll leave them be.
1 rule for the Andrew’s government’s supporters, another for the rest.

Dunno, Andrews doesn't seem that happy about it:

I do suspect police have been treating these scheduled anti-lockdown protests as double-underlined major events with neon flashing lights on their calendars, and that that explains some of the over-policing and heavy-handedness we've seen (as a case in point, a story like this wouldn't have been out of place at the BLM protests in the US last year: https://www.theage.com.au/national/vict ... 58sx7.html). So it's entirely likely that this intra-CFMEU protest flew under the radar and that the differing response had nothing to do with Andrews not wanting to upset the tradies, or whatever.
But news is only just coming in about this now, so it will be interesting to compare numbers, etc.

Interesting scenario, seems the people were actually protesting to the CFMEU about the government mandating vaccinations in the construction industry, so it wasn't actually a CFMEU demonstration.
Setka would have been having a serious WTF moment.

To be fair, the cops were there and focused on maintaining the peace. Anyone breaking the law should have been arrested, yes. Unlike a protest march through the city, this was a localised protest and the protesters weren't focused on assaulting Police.
I actually LOL'd at some of the protesters calling Setka "Dan's Bitch" when the reverse has been said of Dan, yet Setka denies ever having met Andrews.

Yep, potential for the Construction industry to be shut down. I hope that isn't across the board as most small tradies who sub contract to the industry aren't fans or members of the CFMEU and have no time for them.
Interesting scenes and vids here https://www.news.com.au/national/politi ... 2e98094193
As an aside, the CFMEU is an amalgamation of a number of different unions, some of which are actively going through the process to withdraw from the amalgamation due to concerns over Setka.

They were focused on attacking Setka and damaging the building. Then when police finally showed up they turned in the police trying to break it up.stui magpie wrote:To be fair, the cops were there and focused on maintaining the peace. It’s almost like police trying to break up protests results in them being targeted rather than that being peoples sole aim at the start…

A leak. Who'd have thunk it? From The Age's blog:
https://www.theage.com.au/national/vict ... 58t96.html
And an update:Victorian government to announce two-week closure of construction industry
By Paul Sakkal
The construction industry in Victoria will be shut down for two weeks, The Age has confirmed.
Three industry and union stakeholders have been told the Andrews government will announce the closure on Monday night after a day of violent protests outside the CFMEU’s head office in Melbourne.
The announcement is expected to be made at about 7pm AEST.
Only select critical infrastructure works such as hospitals and some ongoing level crossing removal works, which require swift progress to reopen train lines, will continue during the shutdown.
