Well, that sucks
I got invited to a meeting with my boss and the head of HR where I work this arvo. When we got into the video meeting and did the greetings "so, how are you?" I responded with (joking) well it's always a bit nervy to get a meeting with the boss and their boss unannounced. The Head of HR cringed and I thought, uh oh.
Long story short, the project I got the contract extension for has fallen through so I need to finish up in November.
They were both so apologetic I couldn't get angry, just blindsided a bit. The Head offered to be a personal referee for me and to reach out to her contacts which was all very nice. Good place to work, I've enjoyed it and apparently I've done good but they don't have budget to keep me on.
I get that, no hard feelings, just trying to process it as it was completely unexpected. I know employment law, I could make an argument about payments, but I'd rather leave on good terms so I'll go with it.
Have a few drinks tonight, recalibrate the brain to having to start looking for another job again and play on. Not what I needed right now but there's plenty doing it harder. I'll live.

Thanks Ed, didn't take long.
I thought of putting this in the happy thread but decided to close this part off with a happy ending and leave the thread for others to use.
Got an unexpected video call with the boss and ED of HR this arvo. Long story short, she regretted letting me go so went to the CEO and put forward a case to keep me on until at least Feb next year. Not as long as the original contract but better than next month. The CEO agreed and I accepted.
I'm not sure if that's a record, being told you're finishing up and then re-contracted in the same week, but I'll take it. She seemed nervous that I'd say No, but I like the place and people, I understood the business reasons behind the original decision and she'd given me some really positive feedback so staying was a no brainer.
Now I just have to gently call off the recruitment agencies I'd put to work looking for another job, I got one nibble today after the chat, I'll leave that till Monday. It's been a messed up week, time for a drink or 12.
