Victoria is still well clear on total deaths and will stay there.
The good news is, as vaccination rates increase, yes case numbers become largely irrelevant. new modelling suggests the hospitals won't be overrun, as there's already a downturn in length of stay. People being hospitalised are going home quicker.

Vaccines clearly have a positive impact, all the data says so. Hospitalisations and deaths for vaccinated people significantly better for non vaccinated.
NSW started to relax restrictions on 26 August while case numbers were still over 1000 per day, now daily cases are 300 and steadily going down.
With further restrictions removed today the next week or so will tell the tale. If case numbers don't start going back up again, they've nailed it but you'd have to expect they will.
On a separate note, there's reason to believe that the Delta variant is more deadly when you consider the data. Covid Alpha largely killed the soft targets, mainly the elderly and those with compromised health and most younger people who caught it seemingly had no symptoms let alone real health concerns or death.
Delta can't get to the easy targets due to vaccinations, but it seems a lot more young people are being hospitalised and dying from it than Alpha.

With large chunks of the world mostly unvaccinated, mutations will continue and with that it's probable that new variants will come forth.
the flu does the same and we get new variants and new vaccines every year. It's not a reason to stay locked down

Don't be fooled by the reference to "elective" surgeries - quite a few category 1 "elective" surgeries are elective only in the sense that people "elect" to have their life-threatening condition operated on, rather than just "electing" to wait (eg, heart bypass, various cancerous tumours etc etc).

Seeing the ever-rising case numbers and the celebrations over lockdown ending, I just can't help but feel like everybody, Andrews included, has well and truly entered fantasy world. It feels a little like being told you can finally take the cast off your broken arm right after fracturing it again.
