Question re: pick trading rules: is there anything stopping up from trading a pick on the night and then getting it back again? For example, I’d Daicos goes pick 4 we have enough points to match him without using pick 36. So as soon as GWS call Darcy at 2 (matched) then Callaghan at 3, we trade pick 36 to Melbourne for a future second round pick. Then when Gold Coast call Daicos at 4, we match with our remaining picks, then at some point trade Melbournes future second round pick BACK to them for pick 37. They move up one pick in the draft, we get our second round pick back pretty close.

Actually it does t affect Melbourne cause their pick 37 would become pick 36 if we have to use that to match Daicos anyway, but you get the idea!

Can you do that?

There’s no rule that says you can’t you do that BUT what’s the incentive for the other club to own a new pick for five mins and then have an arrangement to hand it back before they used it. Under your scenario what would more likely unfold is that Collingwood will trade out that pick to the Dees for a future second and then buy back in to the 2021 draft by bundling that pick up with one or more of our three future third round picks. In short, why just get our pick 36 back when we can add more to it and get closer to the pointy end of the draft. We certainly won’t be planning to go to the 2022 draft with three third rounders on the night.

A rule was put in place after the swans done something similar a couple of years back. Basically can’t trade out and back in with the same club, so we’d need to get a third club involved.

Thanks. Forgot about that one. The Swans have certainly exploited their share of loop holes over the years. I can see us trading out #36 IF Daicos is called out late enough but we would certainly look to buy back in earlier than 36.

Well, only one more sleep till the first round of the AFL draft.
Things to keep an eye out for -
Does the Daicos bid come later enough that we can trade out pick 36 and secure him with the remainder of our picks.
The future pick swaps that Collingwood offer up ( or not ) in order to buy back into the 2021 second round 24 hours later.
I’m expecting three picks only in the primary draft, one or two in the rookie draft ( pick #2 overall ) and maybe save one spot for the mid year draft after we have seen some more of those who remained not drafted. .

If my math is correct then our selections 38 through to 58 are currently worth 1,697 points.

If the Daicos bid does come at 4 then it'll cost us 1,627 points after the 20% deduction is applied.

This will obviously leave us free to trade pick 36 for something of reasonable value prior to matching a bid.

Great outcome for us if it occurs.

Nice to see GWS with our pick 2. Friggin Melbourne has a draft pick before we do.
