If such reports are borne out, I wonder if there'll be any push for countries with low vaccination rates to actually try to spread this strain, "chicken pox party" style.

Papua New Guinea has something like a 20% vaccination rate I read somewhere, not through lack of Vaccine as Australia and others have donated vaccines to them, but because the people get most of their world news from social media and are seriously vaccine resistant.

This applies to some other pacific countries, but not all. Countries of Contemptibles?

So far the evidence is that Omicron is very mild in fully vaccinated people, we don't have enough data yet to be sure the same applies in unvaccinated but if it is true, seeding them with Omicron positive tourists could save a lot of lives.

The fear is that, at least in more immediate terms, the higher/faster transmission rate could counter the benefits of lower pathogenicity:

Prof John Edmunds, an epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a member of the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said that plan B measures announced by the prime minister were “absolutely not an overreaction” even if Omicron turned out to be milder than the current dominant variant.

Edmunds said there was “not a shred of evidence” that Omicron was half as pathogenic as the Delta variant, but added that even if this were the case, it might not make the difference people hoped for. “This is a very severe setback. There is no question about that.”

“If you are worried about the time [at] which the NHS might start to get very stressed, then halving the hospitalisation rate means that buys you two to three days. I think it’s really silly to suggest this is good news; it couldn’t be further from that,” he added. “This is as bad news as you can possibly get, quite frankly.”

^I think he's just warning we can't be sure yet. The understanding is changing fast, Dave. They clearly need a couple of more weeks of data, but the uncertainty itself means the system has to prepare for the worst. So, even if Omicron does ends up less vicious than Delta, the policy people have to prepare for the worst-case scenario now.

Later on people will moan the policy was too harsh, but policy always has to move early on imperfect information and protect against the worst case. This is why people will always be able to moan about something.

Over here, I'm glad Boris Johnson went to a Plan B stronger policy days after announcing a softer Plan A. Flexibility is okay in my view. But it's their hopeless communication and lack of credibility as people and managers that's shambolic, leaving everyone confused. That confusion makes people feel helpless, or like giving up bothering with doing the right thing. Others use that confusion to claim it's all codswallop.

We still have more Restrictions in Victoria then Plan B has like wear masks in Certain Situations where we have in Shops.

I don't quite get wanting people to work at home when they don't have too.

It is confusing.

On Friday I went into the office in the morning for a meeting. 7 people in a conference room, no masks required, yet on the way home I called into the Chemist, mask required.

This morning I went to the local shopping centre. Mask required everywhere, but once i went to a cafe for brunch, as soon as I sit down I can take the mask off, sit down and have my coffee and brunch while people wearing masks walk past me.

Anyway, in other news, since the state of emergency expires on 15 December, Dan has used his newly minted Dandemic laws to declare a Pandemic in Victoria. The declaration isn't on any government website yet that I can find, but they will need to issue new public health orders under the new legislation by Wednesday otherwise all restrictions will lapse.

It will be interesting to see what they do and, now that they have to table the health advice, how they justify it.

It is confusing.

I don't think anyone, even Dan, knows what the current mask rules actually are.

Hopefully by Wednesday they are made even more simpler as promised.
